There are nine selections involved in the wager, and the design of the Union Jack is made use of to arrange them in rows of three. This means that the four points of St George’s cross, along with the four points of the Scottish saltire, each have a selection, and the rest are placed in the middle. Several treble bets are then made according to the way the selections line up. In other words, there are three trebles horizontally and vertically, and another two can be found diagonally.

The Union Jack bet isn’t only useful for treble bets, though, as punters can use the layout for several other combinations. Firstly, there is a Union Jack Trixie Bet, which comprises eight trebles and 24 doubles. Secondly, you can create a Union Jack Patent bet from eight trebles, 24 doubles and 23 singles. Finally, punters form a Union Jack Round Robin bet from eight trebles, 24 doubles and 24 up and down singles stakes about pairs.

There are several reasons to place a Union Jack bet.

For example, more coverage is offered than there is available with other bets by using the flag design to match up selections. A key feature is the selection in the centre of the flag, as this is involved in both diagonal trebles, plus a vertical and a horizontal. If you place the selection you feel most confident about in the middle, this increased involvement will maximise your chances of achieving several successful combinations. Additionally, the Union Jack bet allows a punter to avoid relying too much on selections they aren’t hugely confident about.

Some punters will recommend placing a double bet, treble bet or accumulator instead of looking at a Union Jack bet, as these types of bet aren’t commonly found with bookmakers. It’s more often seen as a novelty bet, and won’t usually be part of a serious bettors’ strategy. However, this bet will make the most of your stake if some of the trebles end up winning. This is because your profit isn’t reduced on singles or doubles, as it can be with other types of combination bet. As a result, the profits can be huge if you manage to get it right.

This bet is hugely complex, so if you’ve got your heart set on placing a Union Jack bet, it’s strongly recommended to use the Union Jack bet calculator. To do this, first input the desired stake you would place, followed by the bet type. Then, enter any set options, such as Each Way, Rule 4, Dead Heat and Decimal Odds. Finally, enter the betting odds and experiment with various outcomes to see what your total stake, return and profit would be.
