Asian Handicap Betting

What does Asian handicap mean in betting?

This is a variant of handicap betting that was very popular in Asia. It involves handicaps with whole and half numbers so that there are no draws possible. This makes it very similar to no draw handicap match betting.

Frequently the Asian Handicap betting market is seen as confusing, but once you understand it, it’s a handy betting option.

What is an Asian Handicap Bet?

This form of handicapping is perfect for football gamblers who are looking for an alternative to the traditional match result market. The critical difference between conventional handicapping and Asian handicap betting is the possibility of split handicaps. Meaning your selection can have one handicap that is a whole number, and one that is a half number.

This betting market counters the perceived difference in teams abilities, by levelling the playing field before kick off and eliminating the draw from the possible outcome, ensuring that odds are higher.

This is achieved by applying either a negative or positive goal handicap to each side depending on the team that is considered to be the favourite (negative). This is especially useful when the ability of the two teams is considered to be very wide.

Asian handicaps ensure that the better team will begin the game losing. They will either be losing by -0.5, -1 or greater.

Asian Handicap Example

West Bromwich Albion (-1, -1.5) vs Liverpool (+1, +1.5)

In this example, West Brom will need to win the match by two clear goals to win the bet, due to the handicaps that are applied.

However, if West Brom wins by one, then the whole number handicap results in a draw, while the number handicap gives Liverpool the win. Should this happen, you would stand to receive half of your stake back if you had bet on West Brom to win. Although if you bet on Liverpool to win, you would get half the stake returned, and the other half of it would be paid back as profit at the odds that were stated when the bet was placed.

Advantages of making an Asian Handicap Bet

Even if the team you have bet on are defeated, your bet can still win, or at the very least be void, which depends on the handicap. This lowers your risk of losing a bet compared to the match result market. Asian Handicaps are the chosen market for many professional bettors because the market tends to offer better value for money.

Also, betting margins are lower as the draw has been removed, giving you more chance of a sustained profit over time.
