What does Match Betting mean within betting?
The most popular form of betting on football is match betting. This is simple, as the punter is purely putting money on what they believe the full-time result will be. You will see prices for the home win, away win and also the draw within football markets.

What is a Match Bet?
Match result betting is also called 1X2 betting. It’s easy to learn how to read these betting lines. As the ‘1’ signifies the home team, the ‘X’ signifies the draw, and the ‘2’ is for the away club. This is still very evident on most websites, however, some now just have the clubs names as opposed to this old fashioned method. Match result betting is the most common form of football betting.
It’s important to note, that when betting in knockout tournaments, such as the Champions League and the World Cup, there is often the potential for extra time to be needed. If this is the case, match betting only covers the 90 minutes of action. Meaning that if the game goes into extra time, the winning result on the betting line is the draw. This is unless you have bet on a particular team to qualify.
Match Bet Example
You can take any fixture as an example of this, but we will choose the fixture between Newcastle United vs Burnley. Newcastle are the home side here and will, therefore, be recognised with the number ‘1’. When you look on the betting line now, you will see that they have a short price of 11/10, with Burnley being the number ‘2’ and priced at a much higher 3/1 to win the fixture. The draw can be found under the ‘X’ column, and the price for that is 12/5. Just by reading the line you will recognise that the home side are the favourites. This means that a £10 bet will return £21 for the home win, £40 for the away team and £34 for the draw.
Most bettors will use match bets and add them into multiple bets, as the returns of betting on just one team isn’t very lucrative. Inserting it into an accumulator makes it riskier, but the rewards are more significant.
Advantages of making a Match Bet
Like we have previously mentioned, it is the easiest way to place a bet and is so straightforward that anybody can do it. Due to this, it is also easy to see whether you have won, as you will just need to check the match results. The ability to bet on draws is also a good incentive as there is typically good money in backing a draw. The biggest advantage of match betting is the ability to add them to multiple bets such as trebles, four-folds and so on.
This is because it can be a very lucrative option should the bigger bet win. However, there could also be good money in predicting results in competitions which are prone to shocks, such as the FA Cup.
