Punter's Pick

Bet365 are offering 6/5 for over 10 corners, which we feel is very generous considering the attacking nature of both teams and their strength on the flanks. An 8/15 for over 2.5 goals is also appealing as Ajax have scored 19 goals in their last six games, but have also shipped 11 in their last five.

Ajax welcome current European Champions Real Madrid to the Amsterdam Arena for their first leg clash in the last 16. The Dutch giants had an excellent group stage campaign and come into this clash still undefeated in the competition. This is impressive as they were paired alongside German champions Bayern Munich. Despite losing two games, Real Madrid comfortably finished top of their group with 12 points and will be looking to push on and secure their fourth Champions League triumph in a row.

Despite being one of Europe’s footballing giants, Ajax have somewhat been on the wane in recent times, having not won their domestic title for five years and not making much inroads in Europe’s premier competition either. They come in to this game having suffered two defeats in their last three league games, including a 6-2 humbling by Feyenoord and 1-0 loss to mid-table Heracles. However a successful qualifying campaign which featured two draws against Bayern Munich and an undefeated group campaign shows how Madrid cannot underestimate their Dutch counterparts.

Real Madrid come into this game in good form, going undefeated in their last seven games in all competitions. A horror run earlier in the season saw them lose five out of seven games, which would have had Madrid fans fearing for a season of mediocrity. Real have however managed to stay in the title race despite losing six games this season to sit 6 points behind Barcelona. A huge 3-1 derby win away at rivals Atletico Madrid showed that Real have the teamwork and mentality to match the talent in winning big games.

If Ajax are to progress to the next round then they must take advantage of their home leg and look to go to The Bernabeu with a lead. That is likely to see them start with Dusan Tadic up front and be supported by veteran striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Exciting prospect Frenkie De Jong is also likely to get a taste of things to come having agreed to join Barcelona, and he will be keen to leave a mark on his future premier rivals.

Real Madrid will be looking to ensure they are able to overcome their first knockout game in three years without former star striker Cristiano Ronaldo and manager Zinedine Zidane, who collectively helped Los Blancos win their record-breaking three titles in a row. One constant has been Karim Benzema and the French striker has been key in ensuring Madrid get the goals to keep them winning. In more recent games, he has been supported on the flanks by Vinicius Junior and Lucas Vazquez, which often leads to Gareth Bale remaining on the bench. Solari is likely to start with this combination again, with Toni Kroos and Luka Modric pulling the strings in midfield.

In recent head to heads, Madrid have undoubtedly been the dominant team, having scored a staggering 20 goals in their last six games against the Dutch side. Ajax have not registered a win or a draw against Madrid in over 20 years and many feel this trend won’t be overturned on Wednesday night.
