Ateltico Madrid v Juventus

Champions League: Wed, 20/02  Stadium: Wanda Metropolitano Stadium

vs.

Certainly the bookies fear it will be a tight game with Bet365 offering 8/15 for under 2.5 goals. This bet may be worth taking with a view to cashing out after the first 20-25 minutes. But given recent form and the Ronaldo factor, Juventus look a great bet at 15/8 with the same bookmaker and we feel this is a solid bet to back the Bianconeri in coming away with a victory.

Atletico Madrid welcome Italian champions Juventus to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium as two of the most consistent performers in the Champions League go head to head. The pair between them have featured in four out of the past five finals and each one will be looking to go one further this time around after consistently suffering finals heartbreak.

Atletico currently sit in second place in La Liga behind leaders Barcelona and Simeone will be pleased at his team currently outpacing rivals Real Madrid. But in recent games, their form has dipped with the team suffering back to back defeats against Real Betis and then rivals Real Madrid who managed to win 3-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano. This will have affected the confidence of Atletico coming in to the game, after comfortably navigating their way through the group stages with 13 points alongside Borussia Dortmund.

Juventus on the other hand continue to dominate Italian football, winning seven Serie A titles on the bounce and currently sitting 13 points ahead of second placed Napoli. They currently remain unbeaten in the league and also topped their group which included Manchester United and Valencia. They did have a slight wobble having lost 3-0 away to Atlanta in the cup and then drawing 3-3 with Parma in the league having lead 3-1. But two back to back wins quickly dispelled any panic and the fans will be confident heading into this fixture.

In team news, Atletico are likely to be without influential Spanish midfielder Koke, having missed their last four games with a thigh injury. French fullback Lucas Hernandez is also likely to miss out having missed out in the game against Rayo Vallecano with a knee injury.

Juventus will have been boosted by the news that the twin pairing of Douglas Costa and Daniele Rugani have returned to training. The flying Brazilian Costa certainly does have the pace and trickery to open up any game and this will give The Bianconeri options if he was to be passed fit. Juan Cuadrado remains a long-term absentee having suffered a knee injury.

The big question for Juventus fans will be whether Cristiano Ronaldo can be the missing piece in driving Juventus to Champions League glory having failed twice in recent times. The Portuguese had a slow start to life in Turin, but currently tops the scorers charts in Serie A with 19 goals. Juve now boast real strength and class in all major positions with veters Chiellini and Bonucci forming the spine of the defence and Matuidi and Sami Khedira marshalling the midfield. Adding in the flair of Dybala and the big target man Mandzukic and many in Turin will feel it is their year.

These two teams have not been paired together much in recent times, with their last two meetings coming back in 2014. The games were tight affairs with Atletico winning 1-0 at home courtesy of Arda Turan and the reverse fixture finishing in a 0-0 draw.

It is likely that this first encounter will also be a tight affair. Both teams boast strong defences and Simeone usually sets up to ensure his teams remain compact, relying heavily on the goals of star striker Antoine Griezmann. Juventus may feel that Atletico aren’t the same team of recent years and look to go for a lead to take back to Turin.
