Stamford Bridge

Punter's Pick

Chelsea can be backed to keep a clean sheet and take all three points needed to take them into the knockout stages at ⅚ with Bet365, which looks good value given the lack of potency in the Lille attack. The French side have been keep plenty of clean sheets in recent weeks in the French League so this may not turn out to be a goal fest – 2.5 goals and under at 6/4 looks a good value punt, again with Bet365.

Chelsea take on an out of sorts Lille side looking for the victory that will take Frank Lampard’s young side into the knockout stages, a feat which would cap a great first few months in the role for the Chelsea legend.

Champions League underachievers pose little threat?

Of all the sides still remaining in the Champions League to play at home, Lille would have been high up on Chelsea’s wishlist based on their exploits, or lack of this season. The French side have mustered just a single point in the competition so far this campaign, and encouragingly for Chelsea have failed to score on five of their six visits to England.

Domestically the French side are at least coming into this fixture on the back of a three match winning streak, although typically in a post Nicolas Pepe world those wins have all been by a 1-0 scoreline. The goalscoring burden since Pepe departed for Arsenal has fallen on Victor Osimhen, who has netted eleven times in all competitions this season, and would be marked at by Chelsea as the one true dangerman they need to keep quiet in order to progress to the next round.

Chelsea’s defence a concern?

Despite Lille’s apparent lack of attacking quality on offer, Chelsea’s generous defence may at least give the visiting side a glimmer of hope that they can finish their Champions League campaign on a high with three points. The Blues have shipped 24 goals in just 16 league games so far this campaign, including a catalogue of errors in a 3-1 defeat at lowly Everton at the weekend.

Eight goals shipped in five Champions League games also shows Chelsea’s problems are not just limited to domestic affairs – the Blues looked far too open in a 2-2 draw with Valencia last time out, and were lucky the wasteful Spanish side did not have a great night in front of goal.

Team News

Chelsea could be tempted to bring back key German defender Antonio Rudiger back into the heart of their leaky defence – the giant centre back has been missing since September with a knee injury and has resumed training, but it still could be a risk to throw him back into the starting XI. Fellow centre back Fikayo Tomori is definitely ruled out, so manager Frank Lampard may have to entrust Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christiansen again, despite their woeful performance against Everton at the weekend.

Chelsea class to shine through

Despite niggling worries about their defence, Chelsea have generally been playing with confidence and swagger, and if they can keep their nerves in check they will surely have far too much quality for a goal shy Lille team who have nothing but pride left to play for. The Blues showed in their 2-1 win in France they had the measure of Lille, and a similar level of performance will see them moving comfortably into the knockout stages of the competition.
