Punter's Pick

Sadio Mane has revelled in being Liverpool’s main man this season and can be backed at 9/2 to open the scoring against the run of play for the Reds. Both sides to score and the match to finish in a draw also looks a distinct possibility and is available at 7/2, again with Bet365.

Champions League winners Liverpool face up to the very real prospect of the defence of their title falling at the very first hurdle, as they travel to Austria to face a free spirited Red Bull Salzburg side sensing a moment of history.

Patchy European form a worry for Reds?

Despite being dominant at home in the Premier League, with fifteen wins from their first sixteen league games, things have not gone quite to plan for the defending European champions in their quest for back back Champions League glory. A listless 2-0 defeat in the first round of group games against a decent, if hardly world beating Napoli side put them on the back foot almost immediately. Since then a thrilling 4-3 win over Salzburg at home after almost throwing away a three goal lead, combined with unimpressive home and away wins against Genk means the current campaign has hardly set the world alight.

A 1-1 draw last time out at home to Napoli has put Liverpool in the difficult position of having to avoid defeat in their last group game to guarantee progression, although an unlikely defeat for Napoli to Genk would also see the Reds through to the knockout stages. The Reds have been here before of course, overcoming Napoli in the last round of group games last season to progress to the knockout stages, also doing likewise against Spartak Moscow the previous year.

Salzburg attack verve enough to see them through?

Only Bayern Munich(21) and Tottenham Hotspur(17) have scored more than Salzburg’s sixteen goals in the Champions League group stages so far this season, clearly indicating where the Austrian team’s strength lies. The exciting Erling Haaland has eight of those goals, making him one of the hottest properties in Europe at the moment.

Domestically Salzburg have not been shy of scoring too, racking up an incredible 64 goals in just 17 league games, at an average of 3.8 per game. The Austrian champions warmed up for this tie by routing WSG Swarovski Tirol 5-1 on Saturday, and will surely feel confident their host of attacking lineup can get at a Liverpool defence which although ironically kept a rare clean sheet at the weekend, has generally been leaking goals all season so far.

Team News

Liverpool have named central defender Dejan Lovren in their squad, despite the Croatian limping off in the comfortable 3-0 win at Bournemouth on the weekend. Manager Jurgen Klopp may again look to rotate with the games coming thick and fast, although the triumvirate of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino will surely all start after all taking in some bench time in recent weeks.

For Salzburg Patson Daka has been preferred to lead the line instead of Erling Haaland in some Champions League games, with the Norweigan coming off the bench a couple of times. The Austrians are generally not a conservative side and both exciting forwards are likely to start this time.

Liverpool to squeeze through?

Although the Austrian side have been a breath of fresh air in this season’s Champions League, they will surely feel the weight of expectation and anticipation at home as they seek their first ever appearance in the knockout stages. A seasoned Liverpool side will look to quieten the home crowd, and with Salzburg themselves offering up a generous defence the Reds will surely be able to create enough opportunities to put this tie to bed eventually.
