Stade Pierre-Mauroy

Punter's Pick

Ajax always pose a threat on their travels and should be backed at 17/20 with Bet365 to take all three points, especially with the home side at a low ebb. Quincy Promes has been in sparkling form for both club and country, currently leading the goalscoring charts domestically – back the Dutch star to score anytime at 7/4, again with Bet365.

Last season’s defeated semi-finalists Ajax travel to Lille in a clash of top vs bottom in Group H, with the Dutch side looking for a win that will almost seal a place in the knockout stages.

Post Pepe blues for home side?

It has been an indifferent start to the season for the home side, as they currently languish in 10th place in the French Ligue 1, already a massive fourteen points behind perennial runaway leaders Paris Saint Germain. With three defeats in their last five league games, to go alongside only one point from a possible twelve in the Champions League, it is already shaping up to be a tough first season without their former talisman Nicolas Pepe, who was sold to Arsenal in the summer.

The Ivorian star netted 22 league goals in Lille’s triumphant Champions League qualifying campaign last season, but has not been adequately replaced – the French side have found the net just three times in the Champions League, and have only netted 18 goals in 14 league games so far this season.

Ajax continue on their merry way

By contrast, Wednesday’s visitors Ajax also lost key personnel in the summer, but have continued on their merry way both domestically and in the Champions League so far this season. The loss of Frenkie de Jong to Barcelona and captain Matthjis de Ligt to Juventus in the last transfer window has not dampened Ajax’s form or expectations – they currently sit six points clear at in the Dutch top flight, winning an impressive twelve of their opening fourteen games.

In the Champions League they have virtually carried on where they left last season – with key attackers David Neres and Hakim Ziyech still on board, they continue to torment defences all across Europe. A 4-4 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last time out showcased their attacking prowess again, and only dubious refereeing decisions (including two red cards) denied them a chance to put one foot in the knockout stages.

Team News

Ajax have been rocked by an injury to David Neres, with the winger not expected to return from a knee problem until the end of the year. He is joined on the sidelines by Daley Blind and Joel Veltman, the defenders both picking up red cards in Ajax’s last group game and therefore missing out through suspension.

Lille will again be without exciting teenage striker Timothy Weah. The talented American striker joined in the summer from PSG to offset the loss of Nicolas Pepe, but has not been seen since August due to a muscle injury.

Ajax to have too much quality

Despite missing a couple of key defenders due to suspension, Ajax have shown their class and pedigree in recent weeks both domestically and in Europe. Coming into this game Lille look down on confidence and short of ideas in attack to take advantage of the visitor’s potential problems at the back, and the Dutch side will be confident their superior technical ability will tell in what should eventually be a comfortable victory.
