Punter's Pick

Liverpool start this particular game as favourites but will be tested against a stubborn Atletico Madrid defence. The Spaniards were comfortable in the first leg but Anfield will be a different proposition and we are backing Liverpool at 11/20 with Bet365 to win this encounter. For more value it is worth backing Liverpool to qualify in the tie at 21/20 with the same bookmaker. With Atleti desperate to maintain their lead there is also a high likelihood of cards as the Spaniards have been known to resort to gamesmanship and over 4.5 cards at 10/11 looks a real possibility.

Liverpool host Atletico Madrid in what is sure to be another memorable European night at the home of the European champions. The tie is delicately poised with the Spaniards bringing a one goal lead with them but the Kop will be anticipating an improved performance from their team as they look to book their passage into the next round.

Liverpool come into this game having beaten Bournemouth in the Premier League to move within two points of long-awaited league triumph. The team was wobbling in recent times having lost their away tie to their opponents and then getting knocked out of the FA Cup by Chelsea. But despite their win against Bournemouth the Reds looked uncomfortable as a long season and the anticipation of success builds. Atletico were certainly not troubled by the attacking prowess of Liverpool and managed to neutralise their threats quite easily. The Spaniards started quickly and scored an early goal through Saul Niguez after which they were content to sit back and ensure they didn’t concede an away goal. The tempo and build up play was too slow from the champions and they will have to improve and move the ball quicker if they are to get in behind Atletico’s famous defence. But the visitors will also be wary that they hold a much slender lead than what Barcelona had brought with them last season when the Reds overturned a 3-0 deficit and Jurgen Klopp will be confident in repeating the formula this time around.

Atletico Madrid’s form this season has been patchy and they currently sit outside of the Champions League places in La Liga. Back to back draws against Espanyol and Sevilla has halted the momentum they built after defeating Liverpool and then Villareal with Diego Simeone under some pressure to win it this year to ensure they qualify for next season. Certainly the team is more comfortable defending their goal than they are attacking but a forward line that boasts Diego Costa, Alvaro Morata and Joao Felix should have delivered more. The Spaniards are likely to set up to contain in the first 20 minutes with the hope of silencing the home crowd but Liverpool are likely to play at a higher tempo this time around which could cause them problems. Atleti have struggled to keep clean sheets this season and it is unlikely they will manage it come Wednesday night, which may lead to them regretting not going for a second goal in the first leg.

In team news Liverpool will be without star keeper Alisson who is suffering from a hip injury. Adrian is likely to replace him in goal with the second choice stopper looking nervous in recent games. Skipper Jordan Henderson is pushing to be fit after missing the last three weeks and Andy Robertson is likely to come back in place of James MIlner at left-back. Xherdan Shaqiri and Nathaniel Clyne remain the other long-term injuries for the Reds.

Atletico Madrid will have Joao Felix available for this one after the Portuguese sensation missed the first leg. Former Tottenham full-back Kieran Trippier is also available with Diego Costa getting plenty of run outs in recent times. It will be interesting to see if Atleti play two up front or look to contain initially by having five in midfield. Thomas Lemar remains the only injury for Diego Simeone.
