Anfield

Punter's Pick

With Liverpool starting as strong favourites there is little value in backing an outright win. We feel that with their dominant home record and Napoli’s poor form of late, Liverpool should be backed with a -1 goal handicap with Bet365. The bookmaker is giving generous odds of 21/20 for the Reds to win by two goals or more and they managed this against a strong Manchester City side at home, and we back them to deliver against Napoli.

Liverpool welcome Napoli to Anfield with both teams looking to get the three points that will guarantee them a place in the knockout rounds. The Reds know that a point will do but will not find it easy against an opponent that has proved to be a bogey team in recent times. Can the Reds win and progress with a game to spare?

Liverpool come into this game on the back of four straight wins in all competitions and are currently unbeaten in the league. Having played 21 games this season, the Reds are unbeaten in 20 with their sole defeat coming at the hands of their opponents Napoli. This will certainly ensure there is no complacency amongst the camp as Jurgen Klopp looks to book his teams passage into the next round and give his senior players a rest when they lineup to play Salzburg in the final group game. With a busy winter schedule ahead, including the FIFA Club World Cup, Klopp will be keen to reduce the required workload on his key players as fatigue could be the undoing of a brilliant start. The team certainly looked fresh when they thrashed Manchester City 3-1 but the 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace was much harder after the international break, with Liverpool needing a late Firmino strike to get the points. With this game being at home, Anfield will demand that the Reds look to go hard from the start and finish the tie so the team can refocus on the league which is the main priority for so many Kopites.

Napoli are currently having a poor season compared to the standards they set last season. They occupy 7th place and are a massive 15 points behind league leaders Juventus, whom they pushed for most of last season and finished runners up to. The team have not won in their last six games in all competitions, drawing five and losing 2-1 to Roma in the league. Goals has been the real concern with the team scoring just six goals in their last six games, and for a team boasting the likes of Dries Mertens, Insigne, Llorente and Callejon, this is unacceptable to the Napoli faithful. Replacing the creative wiles of Marek Hamsik have proven difficult but the talent at the managers disposal is still vast and they will feel that they could replicate their result from earlier in the season and provide a shock at Anfield.

In team news, Liverpool will continue to be without Joel Matip due to a knee injury. Jurgen Klopp will also be sweating on the fitness of Mo Salah, who despite being an unused substitute against Crystal Palace, has been struggling with an ongoing ankle injury. Xherdan Shaqiri is available and will be pushing to be part of the matchday squad.

Napoli could be without Arkadiusz Milik and Lorenzo Insigne due to stomach and elbow problems respectively. The attacking prowess of Napoli could be significantly reduced but the likes of Dries Mertens and Fernando Llorente will be waiting in the hope of securing a start at Anfield.

In head to heads, this will be their fourth meeting within two seasons, having been drawn in the Champions League group stages in consecutive campaigns. Last season Napoli won their game at home 1-0 courtesy of a late Insigne strike but the Reds got their revenge in a tight 1-0 win through Mo Salah. The pattern was maintained this season as Napoli won 2-0 at home through Dries Mertens and Fernando Llorente but Liverpool will be hoping that the trend of each team winning at home stays consistent on Wednesday night.
