Groupama Stadium

Punter's Pick

Lyon host Juventus in the first leg of their last 16 tie at the Groupama Stadium with the French side hoping to cause an upset against the highly fancied Italians. The home side have never beaten Juventus in European competition but will be hoping to change that record come Wednesday evening.

Lyon come into this game in patchy form and have not hit the heights of last season when they finished third in the league. They are currently in 7th place and a massive 28 points off leaders PSG with their hopes for securing another Champions League place fading fast. Their qualification from the group stages was also uncomfortable with the team just edging Benfica and Zenit St Petersburg to second spot and they will know that winning the Champions League may be their only route back into the competition next season. However, Lyon, they will believe that on their day they can beat anyone and boast one of the most sought after strikers in their ranks. Moussa Dembele has netted 14 league goals in 22 appearances with Memphis Depay also contributing nine goals in 12. Both players have rebuilt their careers at the French club after disastrous spells in England and will be keen to show what they can do on the European stage as interest in them as individuals heats up amongst the leading clubs in Europe.

Juventus have been in excellent form despite recently suffering a shock 2-1 defeat away at Verona. The Italian champions have proved to be solid if not spectacular throughout the season often winning games by the odd goal. This will be something of a surprise for a team boasting the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain but much of their success is built on their solid defence. It’s a formula that keeps working domestically and helped them ease out of the group stages but they may need to be more expansive if they are to go all the way this season.. A tight title race may also prove distracting as Lazio are just a solitary point behind them and Inter could also be within three points after they play their game in hand. Much of their play runs through Ronaldo but the team will need to utilise the qualities of their other stars in order to capitalise on teams focusing too much on their star man. The Portuguese star has hit 21 league goals in 21 league games with no other player hitting double figures which illustrates their reliance on him and this could prove costly as they look to progress further.

How the teams line up for this encounter will be interesting as Lyon deployed a back three in their previous game against Metz and ran out 2-0 winners. But with much of Juve’s threat coming on the wings they may revert to a back four to allow them to compress the space and rely on the attacking abilities of Dembele to hold up play and get them further up the pitch. Juventus will be looking to have Giorgio Chiellini back in defence and partnering up with Bonucci after returning in his previous game. The Italians may look to stay compact in this one which means Matuidi is likely to be joined in midfield by Bentancur and possibly Adrien Rabiot to ensure plenty of steel in the middle of the park. This will most likely see Ronaldo given a free role with Dybala and Cuadrado providing the width on the flanks.

Lyon have been far from consistent this term but do have the ability to upset any team on their day. However we feel that Juventus can remain compact and wait for a moment to break their opponents down given the ability in their ranks and backing them at 19/20 with Bet365 seems too good to miss. Lyon have never beaten Juve in European competition and we don’t expect that run to stop on Wednesday night. Cristiano Ronaldo is also priced close to evens at 10/11 to score anytime and this should be backed to add extra value to your bet.
