Etihad Stadium

Punter's Pick

Manchester City welcome Ukranian champions Shakhtar Donetsk to the Etihad Stadium and the English side will be looking to seal qualification on home turf. With the busy festive period on the horizon, City will want to get the job done on Tuesday night and refocus on their Premier League defence, but Shakhtar won’t be easy opponents as they battle for the runners-up spot in Group C.

Manchester City come into this game having beaten top four hopefuls Chelsea on the weekend. It was a tough battle which the champions finally came through courtesy of goals from Kevin De Bruye and Riyad Mahrez. Concerningly for City fans, Chelsea were much the better team in the opening periods and deservedly took the lead through N’Golo Kante. But they did manage to get a foothold in the game as Chelsea tired and were fortunate to get a deflected equaliser through De Bruyne before Mahrez scored a stunning individual goal. The team still don’t look at their fluent best having been humbled 3-1 by Liverpool the week before, but Pep Guardiola will be keen to guarantee qualification regardless of the performance so he can focus back on the Premier League race. City face tough games against Manchester United, Arsenal, Leicester City and Wolves, all before the turn of the year and he will know that he cannot afford to give up any more points. Therefore City could well field a strong side on Tuesday night, despite just needing a draw, to guarantee the required result and allow more youngsters to finish off the round against Dinamo Zagreb away.

Shakhtar Donetsk start this game in second place and will be pushing to maintain their hopes of qualification by upsetting the favourites. The Ukranian champions have gotten their domestic campaign back to winning ways having gone through a period of indifferent form, drawing four out of five games in all competitions. But a 1-0 victory over arch rivals Dynamo Kiev courtesy of a Sergiy Kyrvtsov strike and 4-1 result over Lviv has helped them open up a 13 point gap at the top as they look to retain their league crown. The team will now be fully focussed on pushing City as they know that the English champions could be fielding a weaker team against Dinamo Zagreb on the final day of the group stages and will need to get something out of the game to feel confident of qualification. Much will depend on Brazilian striker Moraes who has been in good form, hitting a hattrick in the win over Lviv.

In team news, Manchester City will be without back-up keeper Claudio Bravo, who was sent off soon after coming on against Atalanta but Ederson is expected to continue having returned from injury. City will also be sweating on the fitness of Sergio Aguero who picked up a knock against Chelsea and one which Guardiola initially stated could be significant. Gabriel Jesus is ready and waiting for the call and he is likely to lead the line either way. Phil Foden is also available having served a Champions League suspension.

The key news from the Shakhtar camp is that influential striker Marlos is missing due to suspension and significantly reduces the attacking threat of the Ukranian champions.

Manchester City start this game as favourites and there is little value in backing an outright win. Having comfortably won the reverse fixture 3-0, there is very good value offered by Bet365 at evens for City to beat a -2 goals handicap. So if the English champions win by three goals or more then this bet will be paid out. City are likely to play a strong team to ensure qualification and their home form is excellent. Over nine corners also looks a good bet with the champions likely to dominate at home and Bet365’s offer of 8/11 seems generous.
