Santiago Bernabéu

Punter's Pick

Real Madrid host Manchester City in the standout tie of the last 16 as two of Europe’s most attacking teams clash at the Santiago Bernabéu. There are many exciting battles and subplots that will take shape on Wednesday night as the competition’s most successful club come up against a team packed with talent and looking to win the competition for the first time.

Real Madrid come into this game having won just once in their last three league fixtures with the pressure increasing on Zinedine Zidane. In what is a season defining week, Madrid face both Manchester City and Barcelona in the space of a few days and these games could put them out of contention for both titles if they don’t perform well. A whole number of draws in games they should have won has meant that Barcelona sit at the top of La Liga despite losing four games compared to Madrid’s two including a shock 1-0 loss to Levante last time out. The team seems to be needing a rebuild as many of their stalwarts will be coming towards the end of their careers, but the likes of Sergio Ramos and Marcelo have remained key throughout the season with Toni Kroos and Luka Modric still pulling the strings in midfield. The real issue has been the support up to Karim Benzema who has netted 13 goals in the league but no other player has hit double figures. Ongoing injuries to Eden Hazard haven’t helped and with Benzema often being a selfless operator, the goals scored aren’t enough to maintain consistent winning form and the rest haven’t contributed as much as they needed to. Madrid have also been lethargic at times in their buildup play and may be found out when they play quality opposition and this makes it a dangerous time for the manager.

Manchester City will be more motivated than usual coming into this encounter knowing that they could be banned from the competition for the next two years after their controversial ruling for breaching Financial Fair Play rules. The team will have something of a siege mentality as they feel they have been unfairly attacked on many fronts and that desire could fire them up even more for this one. They will know that the defence of their league title is almost over but can still pick up a treble of cups including the one their fans and manager want most in the Champions League. The team has not looked as assured as in previous seasons and a 2-0 loss to Tottenham showed their vulnerabilities. But they managed to grind out an win away at Leicester despite missing a penalty and this demonstrated their mindset to not rollover in the league and maintain their standards for the remainder of the season. Given Madrid’s form and injuries, Pep Guardiola will certainly fancy this tie and may look to press his opponents right from the off.

In team news, Real Madrid have been rocked by the news that Eden Hazard could miss the rest of the season having fractured his ankle in the away loss at Levante. Madrid’s star man hobbled off after a challenge and has been blighted by injuries, featuring in only nine games this season. The team could line up much like they did against Levante however they did improve when Vinicius Junior came on and there have been reports that Gareth Bale is in the squad. Whether Zidane starts with the Welshman will be interesting in a game he knows he cannot afford to lose.

Manchester City have been boosted by the news that Raheem Sterling is available after recovering from a hamstring injury with David Silva also pushing to be declared fit. Sergio Aguero is likely to lead the line with Mahrez and Bernardo Silva likely to take up positions on the flanks. Leroy Sane remains out for City as he continues his recovery from a long-term injury.

With two of the most attacking teams going head to head, many would expect plenty of goals in this one. Despite this the markets are generously priced with Bet365 offering over 8/11 on over 2.5 goals. With Madrid knowing they need to take a lead to Manchester and City pushing for an away goal, this seems like one market that should materialise especially with all the attacking talent on display. The game is also likely to be played on the flanks with the likes of Sterling, Mahrez, Marcelo and potentially Bale all bombing on down the sides. This makes the over 9 corners market at 8/11 also very attractive and we feel this should also be backed to increase the overall value.
