Veltins Arena

Punter's Pick

The bookies certainly aren’t looking beyond a Manchester City victory in this game, so an outright win offers little value. Over 3.5 goals seems to be a good bet at 13/10 with Bet365, especially given the fact that City have hit 10 goals in their last two games. A City win and over 3.5 goals gives you slightly enhanced odds at 8/5 with the same bookmaker.

Schalke welcome English champions Manchester City to the Veltins-Arena, at a time when the German club seems to be in crisis. However, we have seen many teams raise their game when in the Champions League so the questions will be ‘can the Germans upset the odds against a rampant City’?

Schalke were impressive last year in finishing runners up in the Bundesliga to Bayern Munich. The team also comfortably progressed from their group having secured 11 points and losing just the one game. But this has masked the terrible form the team have shown over the course of the season and especially in the league. They are currently languishing in 14th position and have already lost a staggering 11 games, registering just six victories. This has proven to be a tough second season for 33 year old Domenico Tedesco and he certainly won’t get any respite when he comes up against a relentless Pep Guardiola.

City have regained their best form, illustrated by a crushing 6-0 victory over Chelsea and advancing through to the FA Cup quarter-finals. Guardiola is maintaining his push for an unprecedented quadruple and may look to finish the job in Gelsenkirchen so he could potentially rest key players as we get in to the business end of the season. Given Schalke’s poor form, Guardiola will look to be on the attack despite being the away team and take charge from the off.

In team news Schalke are struggling with injuries as they are without Breel Embolo, Benjamin Stambouli, Alessandro Schopf and Steven Skrzybski. They were however boosted by the return to action of Guido Burgstaller, after he missed the last two months with achilles and groin issues.

City don’t have any new injuries to report. Long-term absentees Claudio Bravo, Vincent Kompany and Benjamin Mendy remain out, but having made a host of changes for the FA Cup tie against Newport County, it will be interesting to see who Guardiola starts with in midfield and on the wings. It is unthinkable that Sergio Aguero won’t start up front given his recent record-breaking form, with the question being whether he will attack with both Sterling and Sane or keep some balance with the industrious Bernardo Silva.
