Punter's Pick

Valencia are an interesting 8/11 to win with Bet365 with the benefit of a +1 goal handicap, and in a game that is likely to be very tight this could prove to be an interesting option to explore. Dani Parejo has been in good goalscoring form from midfield for the home side, and is a massive 9/1 to open the scoring with Betfair. The same firm is also offering a generous 7/2 on Christian Pulisic to find the net anytime for the Blues.

High flying Chelsea travel to Spain for what looks to be on paper a tough looking clash against Valencia, with both sides still locked in a three way struggle with Ajax for the two qualification spots available for the knockout stages.

Inconsistent domestic form undermining Valencia

Valencia’s domestic struggles are a stark contrast to their Champions League showings, with the Spanish side struggling to make an impression in La Liga and already looking like they will be struggling for a top four spot and a return to the Champions League next season via the league. They currently sit in tenth position after a 2-1 loss at the weekend to Real Betis, their fourth defeat in 14 league games so far this season. A leaky defence – 20 goals conceded in those 14 league games will give Chelsea hope that their is plenty for their free flowing attack to exploit.

City put an end to Blues winning streak

Unlike their opponents, Chelsea have been in fine form recently, putting together a winning streak of six league games that was only ended at the weekend by Manchester City. Unusually, the defending champions found Chelsea edging possession too, with the Blues average 53% to City’s 47%, an almost unthinkable occurence where a Pep Guardiola managed side is involved.

Chelsea have found it harder to keep up that good form in the Champions League – Valencia turned them over in the first round of games 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, and Ajax squandering a 4-1 lead to draw 4-4 with the Blues after a number of dubious refereeing decisions went the way of Chelsea. Despite falling to defeat at the weekend Frank Lampard’s side showed an ability to keep the ball for long periods, something which will come in handy as they look to dampen the atmosphere in what is usually a very noisy Mestalla Stadium.

Team News

Valencia are likely to stick with a fairly similar team that lost 2-1 at Real Betis, meaning a start for ex Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala alongside ex-Arsenal man Gabriel Paulista, with key defender Garay still suffering from muscular problems.

Chelsea will still be without Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ross Barkley, Antonio Rudiger and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with no other fresh injury concerns after the weekend loss at Manchester City. Mason Mount will be pushing for a recall to the starting XI, with Pedro likely to remain on the bench on a ground which he has scored for previously with Barcelona.

Edgy game could end all square

With both sides locked on seven points along with Ajax, it will be a case of who blinks first in this encounter. Neither side will want to risk defeat going into the last round of group games, with a loss for either side putting their qualification in the hands of other results going in their favour. Both sides having showing a vulnerability at the back which may mean a much more conservative approach in what could end up being an attritional draw.
