Under pressure Brighton & Hove Albion take on Frank Lampard’s impressive Derby County side in an intriguing Fifth Round Cup tie at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

Brighton sinking fast in the league

Brighton come into this team in somewhat beleaguered fashion after a poor run of results in the Premier League. A six game winless streak in the league, stretching back to late 2018 has suddenly seen the Seagulls dragged into a relegation battle. Going further back, they have only secured one league win in their last eleven fixtures, an alarming drop in form as the season enters a critical juncture. They currently sit just three points outside the relegation places, quite a turnaround when considering they had spent most of the season in relative mid-table security.

Their recent highlights have all come in the FA Cup – the Third Round saw them over come fellow Premier League side Bournemouth 3-1, before a rather more thrilling 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion after extra-time saw them overcome stubborn Championship opposition. In Derby County they will be taking on a side not too dissimilar to the Baggies, and Brighton will not be approaching this game in the best of form and spirits.

Rams chasing promotion and a date at Wembley

Brighton’s opponents in contrast come into this cup clash full of optimism for what the last third of the season may hold in store for them. Derby currently sit outside the playoff places on goal difference following a four game unbeaten sequence. They will however, been disappointed to pick up only a point away on their travels at Ipswich Town on Wednesday, with The Tractor Boys rock bottom in the Championship and doomed to relegation.

Having overcome Premier League opposition in the shape of Southampton in the previous round after the tie went to a replay and a thrilling penalty shootout, the Rams will be in confident mood they can dispose of another struggling top flight team. With Liverpool loanee Harry Wilson in sparkling form, Derby will be hoping for another top class performance from the Welsh Wizard. Wilson himself will be desperate to shine again, with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp keenly following his progress as he contemplates if the exciting youngster is ready to make the step up to the Premier League.

Team News

Brighton will continue to be without forward Florin Andone, who picked up a three game retrospective ban after elbowing Sam Field in the fourth-round replay victory at West Brom. Fellow forward Solly March is also doubtful with an ankle injury, and Jose Izquierdo is unlikely to be rushed back in the starting XI, despite recovering from a knee injury that has kept him out for ten weeks.

For Derby Tom Lawrence is pushing for a recall to the starting XI after coming off the bench to score against Ipswich on Wednesday, but on loan Andy King misses out through being cup-tied after appearing for Leicester in Round Three.
