Punter's Pick

We feel that with the respective starts of both teams in the new season and the issues Chelsea currently have in defence, that Liverpool start this game as favourites and the 8/13 price offered by Bet365 represents good value. Over 9 corners at 1.950 in the Asian markets is also a good shout given their last game produced 11 in total and both teams will be competitive as they are domestic rivals which could see this count be higher.

Champions League winners Liverpool play Europa League winners Chelsea in an all-English Super Cup in Istanbul on Wednesday night. Both teams will be looking to secure silverware early in the season and lay down a marker for the rest of the campaign.

Liverpool come into this game on the back of an emphatic 4-1 victory over Norwich on the opening day of the season. Goals from Divock Origi, Mo Salah and Virgil Van Dijk helped secure the points and Jurgen Klopp will be keen for his men to maintain their momentum at the start of the season. The Reds certainly picked up where they left off last year with the team playing at a fast pace and all their key players linking up well despite a patchy pre-season. The only downside was the injury to keeper Alison Becker, who went off with a calf injury which could rule him out for the next few weeks.

Chelsea on the other hand got off to the worst possible start, suffering a 4-0 loss away at Manchester United. Frank Lampard certainly wasn’t handed the easiest start to his tenure at the Blues and saw his side fall away badly in the second half where two quick-fire goals from Martial and Rashford effectively killed the game. He will however have been buoyed by the attacking performance of his team as Chelsea well and created the better chances. Tammy Abraham struck the post with a good effort and left-back Emerson also rattled the bar later in the game, so they would have felt unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. However a rash and lazy challenge from Kurt Zouma gave away the penalty that Rashford converted and after that the Blues never looked in the game.

How the two teams line-up in Istanbul will be interesting as a desire to maintain form and win a trophy will be offset by the need to keep players fit and fresh for the Premier League. Jurgen Klopp may be the manager that looks to make changes and give more gametime to his squad with the likes of Oxlade-Chamberlain, Shaqiri and Keita vying for a starting place having gotten off to a good start on the opening day. The Reds will however be without the aforementioned Alison who could face up to eight weeks on the sidelines. Nathaniel Clyne is also a long-term absentee but Klopp has an otherwise strong team to pick from. Adrian is likely to start in goal and Sadio Mane could still be given time to rest after his exploits in the Africa Cup of Nation with Senegal.

Chelsea have more pressing issues, both with the number of personnel out with injury and deciding who to play with those that are available. Frank Lampard will be keen to get over the United loss as quickly as possible and may be forced to play a strong squad to inject some confidence into the team. The likes of Olivier Giroud and N’Golo Kante came off the bench on Sunday and they may start to add experience and strength in midfield and up front. However the Blues may be forced to start with Kurt Zouma again as they are still without Antonio Rudiger and the sale of David Luiz to Arsenal has left them light at the back. Whether Christian Pulisic starts will be interesting as he is someone who can provide the creative flair to unlock a defence as tight as Liverpool’s.

In recent head to heads, both teams are very closely matched and there isn’t much to separate them in terms of results. In their last four Premier League meetings, both teams have won once and drawn the other two. Liverpool have however won the most recent meeting between the sides when goals from Sadio Mane and a Mo Salah rocket helped them secure the points back in April.
