Punter's Pick

Manchester City are 6/5 to win with a -3 goal handicap with Bet365, and looks to be one of the better value bets available with the odds so clearly stacked in City’s favour. City to win and both teams to score is 8/5 also with Bet365, and could be worth a punt. Phil Foden should get a run out for City and is 2/1 to score anytime, again with Bet365.

The romantic tie of the FA Cup Fifth Round pits minnows and giant killers Newport County against Premier League champions Manchester City, in what is likely to be a lively and entertaining match.

City flex their muscles after blip

Following their surprise and shock 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United, City have quickly got back on track with impressive home wins against Arsenal and Chelsea respectively, and a comfortable 2-0 away win at Everton. The 6-0 hammering of Chelsea was particularly exhilarating, as they dismantled the Blues almost from the first whistle to the last. With key players all over the park such as Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne etc. all coming into peak form, the chase for an unprecedented quadruple is still very much in their sights. If they maintain the form of their last two home games until the end of the season it is difficult to see how anyone domestically and in Europe can stop Pep Guardiola’s men clean sweeping all available trophies in the coming months.

With options such as Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus likely to come into the starting XI for this match to give other players a rest, City arguably also have the strongest squad depth in the Premier League and beyond. With those waiting in the wings hungry to impress, Newport will be under no illusion about the size of the task facing them whatever team Pep Guardiola selects.

Newport continue punch above their weight

Currently sitting in relative midtable comfort in League Two, Newport are eight points outside the play-off places and barring a late surge are likely to be playing League Two football again next season. The FA Cup however is where the ‘Exiles’ have come to life. So far they have dispatched Middlesbrough after taking them to a replay, and even more impressively Premier League side Leicester City were dumped out of the Cup 2-1, amid wild scenes at Rodney Parade.

Leading scores Padraig Amond and Jamille Matt scored in the famous victory over Leicester, and the minnows will be looking to the pair to give City a scare again. With 30 goals between them this season, the front two will at least give City something to think about with their speed and physicality, ensuring City’s defenders will be on their toes come Saturday evening.

A case of how many?

With the formidable array of talent at Pep Guardiola’s disposal, he could literally change the entire starting XI from the Chelsea game and put out a team that would trouble most Premier League sides. The ruthless demolition of Rotherham United in R3 (7-0) and Burnley in R4 (5-0) suggests they will not be showing any mercy to their lower league opponents. Those two results were at least achieved at the Etihad Stadium, so Newport will be hoping away from home on a slightly less favourable surface City may struggle to play with same fluency. Nevertheless, it is hard to look beyond another routine victory for the Citizens, and really should just be a case of how many they rack up in their latest in a long line of demolition jobs this season.
