Vicarage Road

Punter's Pick

Both previous matches between the two teams have produced three goals, so over 2.5 goals again at Evens with Bet365 would look a logical bet. Crystal Palace can be backed to progress to the next round either over 90 minutes, extra-time or penalties at 11/10, again with Bet365.

The FA Cup Quarter Final weekend kicks off with a cracking clash at Vicarage Road, as Premier League and London rivals Watford and Crystal Palace go head to head.

Mixed Premier League form adds to intrigue

Both sides come into this cup clash off the back of league defeats, although in contrasting circumstances. Watford were content to rest several first team regulars away to Manchester City, and duly went down 3-1 to the league leaders, not before a highly contentious Raheem Sterling goal put City on their way.

The Eagles on the other hand come into this tie on the back of a disastrous 2-1 home defeat to ‘rivals’ Brighton. Although not a local derby as such the animosity between the two sets of fans always translates itself onto the pitch to the players, but it was Palace who came off worse in this feisty encounter.

Watford have three wins in their last five league games, Palace have two wins in the same period, so both sides come into this clash in reasonably good form with no clear favourite.

Palace away form could be key

The Eagles have been enjoying themselves on their travels in the league so far this season, racking up an impressive six wins on their way to a 20 point haul. This leaves them sixth on the ‘away’ league table, ahead of more illustrious names such as Arsenal. This is in stark contrast to their home form, where they have lost eight games so far this season, with only Huddersfield having a worse record in the Premier League. Watford would have duly noted this and be aware of the counter attacking threat the Eagles pose on their travels.

Watford seek third win over Palace this season

This will be the third meeting of the two sides this season, and worryingly for Eagles fans, Watford have won both previous meetings 2-1. Their most recent success came in January, where they turned around a 1-0 deficit at halftime to triumph 2-1. A home success was also secured back in August, as the Hornets made a storming start to the season and won their opening four league games, with Palace being their third victims in that sequence.

Team News

Watford are likely to make wholesale changes to the side that lost 3-1 to Manchester City, with up to seven players looking for recalls to the starting XI. The likes of Troy Deeney and Gerard Deulofeu, who came on to combine for Watford’s consolation goal are certain to be restored to the first team. Manager Javi Gracia will have to decide whether to retain regular FA goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, or go with first choice Ben Foster.

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey looks set to be fit after missing the clash with Brighton, whilst influential defender Mamadou Sakho could miss the rest of the season with what has turned out to be a more serious knee injury than first thought.

Extremely tight clash could go either way

This is one of the tightest FA Cup ties seen in recent years, with both sides sharing many similar strengths and weaknesses. Palace’s defence looks decidedly weaker without Mamadou Sakho there to steady them, but they will fancy they have enough power in attack to trouble the hosts. If Wilfried Zaha can keep up the form of recent weeks, they may just be able to squeeze through, although it would be no surprise if the game went the distance to penalties.
