London Stadium

Punter's Pick

West Ham United welcome Southampton to the London stadium in a crucial tie between two teams who have struggled throughout the season. West Ham start in the relegation zone and will be desperate for three points, with Southampton also looking to reach the magical 40 point mark and pretty much secure their league status for another year. Which team will win this proverbial six-pointer and boost their chances of survival?

West Ham are in poor form coming into this one having not won in their last eight competitive games. There were signs of improvement against Liverpool and the team momentarily would have been dreaming of a famous victory when they led 2-1. The players showed great character having gone down to an early Wijnaldum goal, hitting back three minutes later through Diop before Pablo Fornals guided a low shot past Alisson. However the team cracked under the pressure of constant Liverpool attacks with Fabianski making a horrible mistake allowing Salah to equalise before Sadio Mane secured the points. David Moyes felt the team could have managed the game better but must have been happy with how his players responded in a hostile environment and playing against the European champions on their own patch. The team will need to build on that performance and it showed that they have more success when they take the attack to the opposition rather than sit back to absorb pressure as they can get further up the pitch to support the frontmen. It is certainly the style of play West Ham fans want to see more often at the London Stadium and that could be the blueprint for the remainder of the season if they are to stay up.

Southampton broke a run of three successive defeats when they beat Aston Villa 2-0 last time out thanks to goals from Shane Long and Stuart Armstrong. Although the Saints have had their troubles throughout the season, Ralph Hasenhuttl was able to get his team on a run midway through where they lost just once in seven Premier League games winning five of them. That has helped the team open up a 10 point gap from the relegation zone with the team showing their potential in securing notable wins over Chelsea and Tottenham as well as a 2-1 away victory at Leicester. The form of Danny Ings has undoubtedly been the key factor with the forward hitting 18 goals in all competitions and being touted for a possible England call-up. His ability to both hold up the ball and get in behind has allowed Southampton to be more solid when under pressure with the release ball always available with Ings and Long up front. They will be hoping to continue their form until the end of the season as they could have an outside chance of securing a European place if they can go on a run.

In team news West Ham have been hit by the news that January signing Tomas Soucek is set to be out for three weeks with Ryan Fredericks also joining him on the treatment table. Soucek is likely to be replaced by Pablo Fornals who came on in his place when he was injured at Liverpool, going onto score. David Moyes will want to keep as much of his team in place from the game at Anfield which means Jeremy Ngakia could keep out Pablo Zabaleta.

Southampton will be without influential winger Nathan Redmond who has been reported as the only major injury in an otherwise fully fit squad. Kyle Walker-Peters is set to be available but Moussa Djenepo could be out for personal reasons after the death of his mother.

Games between these two can tend to be cagey affairs with a low number of goals. This was illustrated in the reverse fixture which West Ham won 1-0 through Sebastian Haller. Backing under 2.5 goals in this one is priced well at 11/10 with Bet365. You can improve the overall value by backing Danny Ings to score anytime at 6/5 with over 3.5 cards at 5/6 in what is likely to be a combative game.
