Punter's Pick

Bet365 are offering 6/4 for over 3.5 goals in this game which is a result that has materialised comfortably in recent times. The card count market is also interesting, as their last four games have yielded three cards or more. Over 2.5 cards at 4/7 is a good one to go for given the attacking nature of both teams and that Southampton will most likely look to take the game to Arsenal.

Arsenal host Southampton in a must win game for both teams, as Arsenal continue their quest for a top four finish and Southampton fight to avoid relegation. The Saints have proven to be tricky opponents for the Gunners in recent years, so this definitely won’t be easy for Unai Emery’s men.

Arsenal come into this game having lost four out of their last eight games in all competitions. The concern for them has been the ease at which some of the top teams have been able to despatch them, with both Manchester clubs recording emphatic victories. West Ham also showed the way in outmuscling and outfighting their more illustrious opponents in a 1-0 victory earlier in the year so this may be the blueprint for Southampton to deploy.

Ralph Hassenhutl has enjoyed periods of success since he took over at the helm, and the team has been much more difficult to beat in recent times. In fact The Saints have only lost once in their last seven games in all competitions, but an inability to turn draws into crucial wins has kept them in the relegation zone. The team lost the proverbial six-pointer last time out, losing 2-1 at home to rivals Cardiff, which is the result that keeps them in the drop zone and the Bluebirds out of it.

But Southampton fans can take heart from the fact that their team beat Arsenal 3-2 earlier in the season, with two goals from Danny Ings and an 85th minute winner from Charlie Austin. If Austin features, then he is the type of forward the Arsenal defence fears as he is able to use his strength to try and bully an injury ravaged backline.

Arsenal will be hoping that club captain Laurent Koscielny will be fit despite limping off in their midweek Europa League tie. Alexandre Lacazette is also due to return after suspension to potentially partner Aubameyang up front.

For Southampton, Michael Obafemi could return to action after a hamstring injury as well as the return to action of Stuart Armstrong.

Previous games between these teams have certainly been entertaining as their last two games have finished 3-2. Southampton enjoyed the result earlier in the season, but Arsenal managed to secure the same scoreline last season. The fact that Southampton have not kept a clean sheet in their last seven games and Arsenal have the worst defensive record in the top eight, signals goals for this game.
