Punter's Pick

A draw at 12/5 with Bet365 could prove to be a fruitful pick, with neither side necessarily having the know how or confidence at this stage to see out a win. Joshua King is usually Bournemouth’s go to man and is an appealing 7/1 to open the scoring, again with Bet365.

Premier League football returns to Villa Park, as the iconic stadium plays host to its first top flight fixture in three seasons with the arrival of a tricky looking Bournemouth side.

Positives in opening day defeat for Villains

Despite leading for almost an hour away at Champions League finalists Tottenham Hotspur, Villa ultimately succumbed to a 3-1 defeat as they fell away in the final third of the game. The result was not ideal but the performance suggested Villa will be able to give a good account of themselves back in the top flight.

Fitness and tactical naivety were ultimately Villa’s undoing, as they were hemmed in for long periods by Spurs and unable to fashion any counter attacks to take the pressure off their defence. Both elements can be worked on by manager Dean Smith, and Villa certainly did not look overawed on such a big stage to make their return to the Premier League on.

Cherries lacking inspiration?

After a limp end to last season, where the second half of the campaign almost ended with the Cherries getting sucked into a relegation battle, manager Eddie Howe would have hoped for a morale boosting victory to start this campaign. Instead his team served up a turgid performance in a 1-1 draw with newly promoted Sheffield United, showing no signs of shaking off the malaise that affected the closing weeks of last season.

With a squad bursting with talent with all their key personnel such as Ryan Fraser, Nathan Ake and Callum Wilson retained in the summer, and exciting additions such as Harry Wilson (on loan) and Philip Billing arriving, a 1-1 draw was not in the script. With Manchester City to follow this game, the Cherries will be keen to put in an improved performance and come away with something, or face the very real possibility of being winless from their opening three games.

Team News

New Aston Villa signing Douglas Luiz could make his first start, while full-backs Frederic Guilbert and Matt Targett are both pushing to make their debuts, giving manager Dean Smith plenty to ponder after a competent display from his team last week. Jonathan Kodjia is definitely out with a sprained ankle along with defender James Chester and Kortney Hause.

For Bournemouth winger Arnaut Danjuma is still missing with a foot injury and joins an already growing casualty list with Lloyd Kelly, David Brook, Dan Gosling, Simon Francis, Lewis Cook and Junior Stanislas also ruled out.

Spoils could be shared

Backed by a partisan home crowd, Villa will definitely be energized for this fixture and will fancy their chances of getting all three points. However Bournemouth are a seasoned Premier League outfit, and often do a lot of their best work on their travels. It would be no surprise with the season still in its embryonic stages if the spoils were shared in a lively and feisty encounter.
