Villa Park

Punter's Pick

With both teams in good goal scoring form, over 2.5 goals at ⅘ with Bet365 looks an attractive proposition. Imposing Aston Villa striker Wesley showed his prowess with a brace against Norwich City last week, and is 11/2 to open the scoring in this clash, again with Bet365.

Aston Villa play host to Brighton with both teams resuming their campaigns in a better frame of mind after picking up wins immediately before the break for international fixtures.

Likely relegation candidates facing off?

With just one point separating both teams before kick off, both sides are sitting perilously close to the relegation places, with Brighton in fourteenth place and Villa in fifteenth. Just two points separated Everton in the last of the relegation places and Manchester United in twelfth position, an early indicator that the fight to stay up is going to be tight one.

Both these sides will view each other with some cautious and optimism, and will realise that even in the still early stages of the season finishing above each other is likely to be a giant step in the race to stay up. This will become even more apparent if Everton and Watford begin to find some form and play to their potential, freeing up two of the three relegation spaces. A defeat in this fixture could become a telling result in the final shake up come the end of the season in May.

Impressive wins for both sides before the international break

The enforced break to accommodate international fixtures came at the worst possible time for both teams, as both Villa and Brighton ended a winless runs with fine performances in their last fixtures.

For Villa a first away win of the season was secured with a stunning 5-1 win at Norwich City, as they ruthlessly exposed their fellow promoted side’s defensive deficiencies. That win halted a run of no wins in four games, and for now keeps the Villains clear of the relegation places.

The Seagulls themselves ended a run of six games without a win with a fine victory over Tottenham Hotspur last time out, as they took full advantage of Spurs’ current predicament to register a much needed boost. That win was their first success since the opening game of the season, when they defeated another London opponent 3-0 as well, with Watford being on the receiving end on that occasion.

Team News

Vila are boosted by the return of Thomas Heaton, Bjorn Engels and Jonathan Kodija, who all resumed full training during the international break and should be available for selection.

Jose Peleteiro Ramallo, however, will not be back until next month following a hernia operation, but experienced defender James Chester is close to a return but this game is likely to come too soon.

Brighton are sweating on the fitness of forward Leandro Trossard, who has picked up a groin injury, although Davy Propper and Steven Alzate are expected to return to the squad and come into consideration. The Seagulls must do without Jose Izquierdo and Bernardo, with both players carrying knee injuries.

Entertaining tussle may end in draw

With both teams capable of playing some enterprising football, and generally being better at going forward then defending, there could be goals on the cards. Morale will be high in both camps after both sides ended a run of poor form, and they may end up cancelling each out in what should be an open and entertaining contest.

Although Villa did triumph 3-1 in the Carabao Cup clash between the two sides earlier this season, both sides played vastly under-strength starting XIs so that result so should have no bearing on this clash.
