Selhurst Park

Punter's Pick

Palace are priced at a generous 6/5 to win with Bet365, but given their inconsistent form, especially at home last season, a draw at 23/10 with the same firm may be the more sensible option. Wilfried Zaha is due a contribution for the home side and is priced at a generous 7/1 to open the scoring on Saturday with Betfair.

Crystal Palace play host to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, with both sides in confident mood following their first wins of the new season last time out.

Palace to be this season’s Jekyll & Hyde show?

After a tame goalless draw on the opening day of the season against big spending Everton, Palace subsequently lost 1-0 to another newly promoted side Sheffield United, raising the suspicion that unless Wilfried Zaha delivers the club may be heading into a relegation battle. With a handful of modest signings including some on free transfers or on loan, it was hardly the start that Eagles’ fans were looking for, especially with the Zaha transfer saga rumbling on throughout the summer. Then came a trip to Old Trafford and what looked like another inevitable defeat, only for Palace to go and make history and secure their first away win against Manchester United since 1989.

But true to form, their next outing against Colchester United at home in the Carabao Cup did not go to plan, with the Eagles blowing their chance of a decent cup run by going out 5-4 on penalties after yet another listless display at Selhurst Park.

Villa up and running after encouraging start

Despite back to back defeats to start the season, the Villains have not looked overawed on their return to the top flight, leading Tottenham for a large period on the opening day of the season before going down to a narrow 2-1 loss to Bournemouth in their next game. Their breakthrough moment came last Friday at Villa Park, with a raucous home crowd behind them they edged out Everton 2-0 to register their first points of the season.

Manager Dean Smith has looked to have got his side playing with confidence and good organisation, both important qualities for a newly promoted side looking to establish itself in the Premier League. Their midweek 6-1 demolition of Crewe Alexandra hinted at plenty of squad depth, as Smith’s side cruised to victory despite making a raft of changes.

Team News

Unsurprisingly, Palace will be recalling several first teamers rested in midweek, with the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Jordan Ayew coming straight back in the starting XI. It is at the back where Palace’s problems seem to keep on mounting, with last weekend’s hero against Manchester United Patrick Van Aanholt struggling with injury, and now Joel Ward also looking unlikely to make Saturday’s game. Mamadou Sakho and James Tomkins both still remain out but are nearing full fitness, but are more likely to be available after the international break.

Aston Villa have a relatively fit squad to choose from, with James Chester still absent with a hamstring injury, now also joined by Matt Targett who has a similar problem. Forward Jonathan Kodija is also out with an ankle injury.

Stalemate at Selhurst Park?

With Palace’s inconsistent form and mounting injuries in defence, Villa may sense more than a chance to come away from Selhurst Park with at least a point. Palace will hope to build on last weekend’s win at Old Trafford, but they may opt for a cautious approach to protect their patched up back four, so a share of the spoils may be on the cards.
