Villa Park

Punter's Pick

Given Liverpool’s inability to keep a clean sheet at present both domestically and in Europe, both teams to score at Evens with Bet365 looks to be one of the standout value bets available for this fixture. Equally if you gamble on this fixture to follow the Reds’ recent run of results, Liverpool to win and both teams to score is an appealing 8/5, again with Bet365.

Aston Villa welcome Southampton to Villa Park in a real six-pointer between two clubs battling relegation. Both sides have shown glimpses of form but consistency and a lack of goals has hurt them. This game gives each a chance to put some daylight over the other by securing a win on Saturday and moving away from the relegation zone.

Aston Villa come into this game having won just one of their last seven Premier League games. Despite playing well in some games, they have lost to Liverpool, Wolves and Chelsea by the odd goal in recent weeks. A 2-0 win over Newcastle failed to kickstart a run as they then lost three on the bounce including a 2-0 loss to one of their fellow promoted clubs in Sheffield United. The Villans were outplayed for large periods of the game and despite going down to two Jonathan Fleck goals, couldn’t give themselves a chance when Jack Grealish missed a late penalty. The Villa captain has been in fine form and at times carried the club but he will have been disappointed at not converting to give his side a chance and Villa now sit just above the relegation zone on the same points as Southamton. Only goal difference is keeping them out of the bottom three and the team will have to be quick out of the blocks in order to set the tone against a Southampton team that can be good defensively.

The Saints have had a mixed run of late having secured a 2-2 draw away at Arsenal which felt like a loss. Southampton had outplayed the Gunners for much of the game but a lack of concentration allowed Arsenal to twice cancel out goals from Danny Ings and James Ward-Prowse through Alexandre Lacazette. The performance did spur on the team and they went on to record back to back wins against Watford and Norwich before losing to Newcastle and West Ham in their next two. Goals have been a huge issue for Ralph Hasenhuttl and his team with the Saints not able to score more than one goal in so many of their fixtures. This has meant they have drawn or lost games they have been winning and is why they are in the drop zone.

In team news, Aston Villa will be making wholesale changes to the side that beat Liverpool’s youngsters in the midweek League Cup game. Some players were able to regain form and it will be interesting to see if Kodija who impressed up front is preferred to Wesley who has struggled this season. Captain Jack Grealish is expected to come straight back as is Anwar El Ghazi.

Southampton will be looking to Danny Ings to lead the line up front and the manager will have to decide whether he drafts in Shane Long alongside Ings or keeps him on the bench. Oriol Romeu came off the bench last week and it is expected that the Spaniard will start this time around with Nathan Redmond and Djenepo looking to provide the width.
