Villa Park

Punter's Pick

Unsurprisingly Tottenham start this game as favourites given their recent win over Manchester City and progress in the FA Cup. They have also dominated this fixture in recent times winning their last four competitive games against Villa including the reverse fixture 3-1. Therefore backing Mourinho’s men at 17/20 with Bet365 seems a good shout, especially as they have started to score more frequently in recent times. Spurs are also likely to dominate the game up front and backing them for a corner handicap of -1 at 6/4 also represents good value, especially when they won the last corner contest 14-0 back in August.

Aston Villa welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Villa Park as both sides continue their push at opposite ends of the table. VIlla are just one point above the relegation zone with Tottenham still in the hunt for Champions League football. Who will be closer to their goal come 4pm on Sunday afternoon?

Aston Villa’s form coming into this game has been indifferent with the team beating Watford 2-1 and then progressing to the final of the EFL Cup after overcoming Leicester. However they lost their proverbial six pointer to Bournemouth last time out despite being a man up for most of the second half. Bournemouth seemed to cope with their threat well and they couldn’t get anything out of the game despite a 70th minute goal from Mbwana Samatta. With very few games remaining against those in and around them in the league, the VIllans will have to play at a level above to ensure they take points from teams sitting in mid-table or above. The form of Jack grealish is going to be crucial to their hopes of survival as the midfielder has been the driving force for the team, but talk of a potential transfer away from Villa Park may prove a costly distraction. Fans will also be buoyed by striker Samatta bagging his first goal despite defeat to Bournemouth and his pace and finishing will also be a key factor in their bid to stay up.

Tottenham have been in good form and not lost a competitive game in their last six outings. A memorable win over Manchester City has set the foundations for Mourinho who will be relieved to have secured his first ‘big’ victory over a top four side and the fans will start to believe he is putting his stamp on the team. The form of Heung-Min Son has been key in the absence of Harry Kane with the South Korean often spearheading their attacks and carrying the ball forward. He has been ably supported by Lucas Moura and Dele Alli, who has had a resurgence under Mourinho, keeping their hope of Champions League football very much alive. The team needs to stay focussed as they have a huge week after this game which could define their whole season. RB Leipzig lie in wait next in the Champions League with a big clash against fourth placed Chelsea due after.

In team news Villa will be without striker Keinan Davis who faces up to three weeks on the sidelines. They are also without John McGinn but Ezri Konsa will be in contention despite coming off against Bournemouth with a thigh complaint.

Tottenham should have Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela available for selection. The Argentine pair have missed games recently but return to boost Mourinho’s ranks as he goes into a season-defining week.
