Vitality Stadium

Punter's Pick

Bournemouth welcome Chelsea to the Vitality Stadium as they continue their battle for Premier League survival. Chelsea have their own battle at the opposite end of the table as they look to consolidate their grip on a Champions League place but both teams have been stuttering of late and could fail in their respective aspirations if they don’t start winning soon. Previous games between these two have been entertaining and fans will be hoping for a thriller on Saturday afternoon.

Bournemouth have struggled this term and a lot of it has been down to injuries to key players throughout the season. At times they have had up to eight or nine first team regulars out at the same time but they have continued to battle and managed back to back wins against fellow strugglers Brighton and Aston Villa. Those wins should have been the catalyst for the team to go on a run but a late loss away at Sheffield United was a blow and they suffered against Burnley last time out, going down 3-0. Even with some players becoming available, the rustiness and lack of playing time together has been evident with the team struggling for fluidity and consistency in games, often giving up the majority of possession in most games. Eddie Howe may need to give his players the freedom to express themselves more as they haven’t managed to keep out high quality opposition when they have been camped in their own half and the team functions better when they are on the front foot. Whether he decides to opt for this tactic remains to be seen but time is running out to open up a gap and put daylight between the bottom three.

Chelsea come into this game having won just two of their last seven competitive games. A good away performance at Leicester was followed by a 2-0 home defeat to Manchester United who put in a perfect away performance and illustrated Chelsea’s issues in breaking teams down. Frank Lampard would have been buoyed by their 2-1 win over London rivals Tottenham with Olivier Giroud and Marcos Alonso ensuring Lampard did the double over his former mentor Jose Mourinho. But that joy was short-lived as Bayern Munich put on a masterclass and swept the Blues aside 3-0 in their Champions League encounter in London highlighting the gulf between Chelsea and the elite teams around Europe. One positive has been the effect of Olivier Giroud who has been able to hold up a lot of the play and bring other players into the game. Chelsea were struggling to get up the pitch and penetrate the opposition when Michy Batshuayi was preferred but the World Cup winner has certainly had an impact and it will be interesting to see if he starts again. The loss of N’Golo Kante has also been felt with Jorginho struggling when teams have pressed and been combative in the middle of the park, often overrunning the Blues. Whether he persists with Barkley and Jorginho will be interesting as the pair were guilty of giving the ball away consistently in midweek.

In team news Nathan Ake is available and looking to start against his former club with Jefferson Lerma also pushing to be fit. However long-term absentees David Brooks, Charlie Daniels, Chris Mepham, Lloyd Kelly and Arnaut Groeneveld remain out.

Chelsea will be pleased to see Tammy Abraham come off the bench in midweek and Frank Lampard will have to decide whether he is fit from the off or to persist with Olivier Giroud up front. Ruben Loftus-Cheek could be another option as he was in the squad when Chelsea played Spurs and given the form of Ross Barkley, could be preferred to bring in some steel and composure to the middle of the park. However the key trio of N’Golo Kante, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic remain out.

Coming into this game, Chelsea have been installed as the favourites but due to their poor form their price for a win is somewhat generous. Bet365 have the Blues at 8/11 to win against a team that has struggled to cope with injuries and give up much of the play even at home. Frank Lampard’s men will be looking to bounce back from their 3-0 mauling against Bayern Munich and definitely have the quality to beat the Cherries on their own patch. Bournemouth did however get a 1-0 win in the away fixture and this is likely to be a cagey affair so also backing under 2.5 goals at evens is also a good bet.
