Punter's Pick

A draw looks like a high probability result, and can be backed at 23/10 with Bet365. With both sides struggling to score many goals, a 1-1 draw looks particularly appealing and is worth a punt at 11/2, again with Bet365.

Brighton play host to Southampton looking to preserve their unbeaten start to the season, whilst the Saints will be looking to open their account for the new campaign.

Contrasting defeats for Saints

An opening day 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Burnley did not bode well for the Saints and their new campaign, as they were outmuscled and overpowered by a typically tenacious Burnley side. Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl would have been concerned how powerless and bereft of ideas his side looked so early into the season. However, last week saw a much improved performance, as Southampton went down 2-1 to Champions League winners Liverpool. The Saints dominated the opening 45 minutes only to fall behind to virtually Liverpool’s first attack of the game, and continued to carve out chances throughout, threatening to comeback from 2-0 and snatch a point right at the death.

The tenacity shown will have given Hasenhuttl encouragement that his side are up for the fight this season, as early signs suggest that it could be another relegation battle on the horizon, especially if they continue to make defensive errors that has already gifted goals to Burnley and Liverpool in the opening weeks of the season.

Refreshing start for Seagulls

In contrast, another of last season’s strugglers Brighton have made a very acceptable start to the season, picking up a win and a draw in their opening two games. This campaign marks the first time Graham Potter has managed in the Premier League, and early signs show that tactically he is up to the challenge and his players are responding to his methods. The 3-0 away day demolition of Watford was particularly impressive, as his side controlled last spells of the game and broke away clinically to put the home side to the sword. A 1-1 draw last weekend against big spending West Ham United ensured an unbeaten start to the season, and Brighton will be hoping to pick up something from this fixture, with a testing game against champions Manchester City to follow.

Team News

The home side have no fresh injury concerns with Jose Izquierdo, Yves Bissouma and Ezequiel Schelotto remaining sidelined after picking up injuries in pre-season.

Southampton will have a fully-fit squad to choose from, with goalkeeper Alex McCarthy available again after missing last week’s defeat to Liverpool. Danny Ings will be pushing for a place in the starting XI after his goalscoring impact from the bench last week against his former club, especially with fellow striker Che Adams missing several gilt edged opportunities against the Reds.

Low scoring draw?

Southampton have only lost once in their last eleven visits to Brighton, so will be reasonably confident of picking up their first point of the season, especially if they can cut out the individual errors at the back. Brighton have not made a habit of scoring many goals at home – just eight in their last thirteen games, and failing to score more than one goal at home in that sequence. A low scoring draw looks to be a satisfactory outcome for both teams.
