Turf Moor

Punter's Pick

Newcastle are a generous looking 3/1 to take all three points with Betfair, and it is work remembering they did the double over Burnley last season, and should be backed at this price. Alternatively Newcastle also look good value for all three points with the benefit of a +1 goal handicap, available at ⅘ with Bet365.

Two teams heading in opposite directions in the Premier League clash on Saturday at Turf Moor, as a fast sinking Burnley face a rejuvenated Newcastle United side.

Burnley sinking into a relegation battle?

Based on current form, the Clarets look all set to be involved in a relegation scrap over the coming months, a stark contrast to a few weeks ago when a top ten spot in the Premier League looked like a more than achievable objective. Three successive defeats have quickly put paid to that notion, and of even more concern for manager Sean Dyche will be the fact his side have lost six of their last eight league games.

A small crumb of comfort for Dyche will be that his side is actually six points better off this season compared to the same point last season. The major difference is the sides around them this side are picking up points more regularly, leaving Burnley just three points outside the relegation zone and potentially only a couple more poor results away from sinking into the bottom three.

Newcastle looking upwards not down for a change?

By contrast Burnley’s opponents on Saturday are enjoying their best run of form all season and rapidly moving up the table after an indifferent start to the season. Steve Bruce has brought a new found discipline and cutting edge to his Newcastle side in recent weeks, and enjoyed seeing his side go on an impressive run which has seen them lose just once in their last seven league games. That run has included impressive wins over the likes of Sheffield United and a draw against defending champions Manchester City, and also crucially a win against Southampton last time out, putting seven points between themselves and the relegation places. If Bruce’s side can maintain their impressive run of form there is no reason to suspect they cannot be pushing on for a top ten place, in stark contrast to a certain relegation battle most observers had them nailed on for this season.

Team News

Burnley are sweating on the fitness of their first-choice strikers Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes, with neither guaranteed to overcome recent niggles and take their place in the starting XI. Ashley Westwood may be recalled after three weeks out, but Charlie Taylor may have to wait another week for his return.

Newcastle United forward Allan Saint-Maximin has been sidelined for a month with a hamstring injury after limping off in the 2-1 win against Southampton, while defender Ciaran Clark is also ruled out.Key due Jonjo Shelvey and Miguel Almiron are both major doubts with respective calf and hamstring problems.

Injuries may determine the result

With key personnel on both sides struggling for injuries, this promises to be a tight match up and it may come down to who can field the strongest possible XI on Saturday afternoon. Certainly Burnley’s threat will be severely diminished if their key strike due of Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood are not available, and it may open the door for Newcastle to continue their recent winning streak and pick up another three points.
