Turf Moor

Punter's Pick

A draw at 11/5 with Bet365 looks a realistic prospect, with both sides unlikely to over-commit in this season opener. Danny Ings will again be Southampton’s talisman this season and could return to haunt his former club – back him at 21/10 to find the net anytime, again with Bet365.

The first day of the new campaign pits two of last year’s strugglers Burnley against Southampton. Both teams will be aiming to start the new season strongly and avoid getting sucked into another relegation battle that was the feature of their 2018/19 season.

Will Burnley rue low key transfer window?

Usually reknowned for their prudent work in the transfer market, this summer has been no different from Sean Dyche with Burnley barely doing any business of note in the current window.

Former striker Jay Rodriguez has returned from West Bromwich Albion in a £5million move, a deal which has proven to be popular with fans but will hardly be striking fear into opposition defences in the Premier League.

The signing will still at least provide some competition and variety to last season’s preferred pairing of Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood.

Goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell has arrived from Leeds United, assumedly to act as back up to Nick Pope who should be promoted back to No 1 status, paving the way for Tom Heaton’s departure.

Dependable left-back Erik Pieters has also arrived from Stoke City, but fans will be rightly concerned that the squad has not progressed both in depth and quality of players needed for Burnley to steer clear of a relegation battle and progress back into the top half of the table.

Southampton bolster forward line

Burnley’s opponents on the other hand have been strengthening in numbers at the top end of the pitch in particular, with Danny Ings making his loan spell from Liverpool permanent in a £20million deal.

He is joined by exciting winger Moussa Djenepo from Standard Liege, whilst another forward Che Adams, has signed from Birmingham City. The talented forward will be keen to prove he can step up into the top flight.

With a seemingly never ending supply of academy players also ready to call upon, the Saints will surely be looking to challenge for a top ten position this coming season rather than spend the vast majority of the campaign fighting against the drop.

Can either said take all three points?
The two clashes between these two sides last season both ended all square, with a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor in February following on from a 0-0 stalemate in August.

With both sides finely balanced another draw would seem like the obvious result, with neither side keen to kick off the new campaign with a defeat.

However with Southampton’s attack shaping up with more variety and pace than Burnley’s rather more direct approach, the visitors will be hoping they can claim at least a point on their travels from this fixture.

With both sides starting slowly last season and with the scars of a relegation scrap firmly in mind, a third successive draw would not be entirely unexpected.
