Relegation threatened Cardiff City take on fast sinking Everton at the Cardiff City Stadium, with both sides desperate for three points for different needs.

Cardiff outside the relegation places for now

With two wins in their last five league games, Cardiff have at least steered themselves clear of the relegation places for now, with one point separating them from eighteenth placed Southampton. They have been somewhat been helped by the Saints’ untimely dip in results, with their closest relegation rivals picking up only two points in their last four league games. With Brighton also slipping further and further into the relegation dogfight, Cardiff will sense an opportunity to put some daylight between themselves and the relegation places, whilst at the same time increase the pressure on the Seagulls.

However Cardiff come into this game on the back of a 5-1 thumping by Watford, the third time they have conceded five goals in a single league at home this season. They desperately need to tighten up on their defence, particularly at home, having conceded a league high 28 goals at home this season, something which will give Everton’s attackers plenty of encouragement.

Everton sinking fast under Marco Silva

Appointed to much fanfare in the summer, Portuguese Marco Silva had a mandate to break into the top six this season, and was considerably backed in the transfer market with a raft of new signings. However, early season optimism has quickly given way to a feeling that end of the season cannot come soon enough for players, fans and perhaps the manager too.

Their recent form coming into this game will definitely have been noted by Cardiff manager Neil Warnock as he seeks to inspire his players to a much needed three points. Everton have lost three games in a row, and stretching further back have lost eight of their last eleven. With a Merseyside Derby against Liverpool also looming on Sunday, Silva will be desperate to avoid going into that clash on the back of a four game losing streak, something which last happened to the Toffees back in January 2015.

Team News

Cardiff City loanee Oumar Niasse will be ineligible to face his parent club Everton, so Kenneth Zohore could make his first start in five months if manager Neil Warnock elects for a like for like swap. Aron Gunnarsson is expected to return from injury, while Lee Peltier, Bobby Reid and Victor Camarasa could be all be fit. The latter is at the centre of a row with the on loan Real Betis star’s own private medical team getting involved in deciding his availability, much to Warnock’s displeasure.

Everton defenders Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines are available after overcoming knee and rib injuries respectively, but Colombian Yerry Mina remains a doubt, while fellow central defender Kurt Zouma misses out serving a one-match ban.

Unpredictable teams could serve up an entertaining clash

The form and unpredictable nature of both teams does not point to any clear favourite, with both sides showing vulnerabilities in key areas. Cardiff’s leaky defence is sure to be tested by Everton’s fast and mobile attackers, while Everton themselves have conceded a third of their goals from free-kicks and corners, something the physical and tall Cardiff side will look to exploit. It could be all set for a high scoring thriller, with both sides taking a share of the spoils.
