Punter's Pick

With Chelsea likely to dominate the game, we like the odds by Bet365 of 21/20 on a -4 corners handicap for Chelsea (they must win by 5 corners or more). Alternatively, odds of 4/6 for over 2.5 cards also looks realistic as Newcastle may struggle to contain Chelsea’s attacking players and likely resort to fouls throughout the game to keep pace.

Still smarting from their Carabao Cup first leg defeat to rivals Tottenham, Chelsea will be keen to get back to winning ways in order to keep pace for a top 4 finish. With Arsenal sniffing around in 5th place and a resurgent Man United finding form with their new manager, Chelsea certainly will need 3 points in this fixture to cement their grip on the 4th Champions League spot.

Rafa however will be looking for any type of result as his team languishes just two points above the drop zone. Despite saying that it would be a ‘miracle’ for Newcastle to survive, he will secretly believe he can continue to deliver top flight football to St James’ Park.

How the teams set up on Sunday will be interesting and a major guide to how the game will pan out. At times this season, Rafa has been accused of deploying tactics that are ‘anti-football’, with a view to flooding his own half and stifling opponents. However, this may not be a bad ploy against a Chelsea team that has struggled for goals. They have not scored more than 2 goals in any of their last 12 games and the last time they achieved this feat was a 4-0 win over PAOK Salonika in the Europa League.

With Hazard being deployed in a false striker role, Chelsea have relied on others to provide the impetus and creativity so often delivered by Hazard himself from midfield. With the impending departure of Cesc Fabregas, the pressure on Jorginho will be even higher. Olivier Giroud still seems to be viewed as a super-sub and doesn’t start as much and Alvaro Morata has flattered to deceive after his big money move and sat out the cup game against Spurs. With the rumour mill suggesting he will be shipped out to Sevilla, Chelsea fans will be eagerly awaiting to see if Abramovich offers his chequebook to Sarri in this transfer window.

Benitez on the other hand has been severely restricted in the transfer market due to a lack of funds. One of his players main players earlier in the season, Kenedy, is a loan signing from Chelsea, but a reported breakdown between manager and player has left his loan deal in the balance. The focus will again fall on Saloman Rondon to provide the goals and lead the line and he is likely to be brought straight back in to the starting lineup with the likes of Ayoze Perez and Jonjo Shelvey.

The odds certainly are stacked in Chelsea’s favour heading in to this game. Just 1 win in the last 7 encounters against Chelsea illustrates how it is likely to be a long afternoon for the Magpies at the Bridge. Patchy form from Newcastle has meant that they have not won a game in their last 5, whilst Chelsea have also proven erratic, losing at home to Leicester and drawing against Southampton. But in this particular game, the blues should have too much firepower for Newcastle to spring any major surprises.
