Stamford Bridge

Punter's Pick

With Chelsea finally registering their first win under Frank Lampard, it is understandable that the Blues start this game at home as strong favourites. There is a little value in backing an outright win but Bet365 are offering a generous market on over 2.5 goals at 8/11 and this is something we feel has a high likelihood of materialising. Three of Chelsea’s four games have had three goals or more and with their defence not as strong as in recent years, there is a good chance Sheffield United will get on the scoresheet which would require Chelsea to score at least two goals to win.

Chelsea welcome newly promoted Sheffield United to Stamford Bridge with both teams winning just one of their first three Premier League games. The two are currently joined on four points and both will feel that they can take all three points come 3pm on Saturday afternoon.

Chelsea come into this game on the back of Frank Lampard’s first win as Chelsea manager. A hard-fought 3-2 victory was sealed courtesy of a Tammy Abraham brace and Mason Mount strike although the Blues will feel that there should have been more daylight in the score. Despite playing well in most of their games, Chelsea still aren’t firing on all cylinders and are struggling for goals. It will be interesting to see how much game time Michi Batshuayi gets as thus far Abraham and Olivier Giroud have been the preferred choices. Barring the Liverpool game on the 22nd September, Lampard will feel that their next eight fixtures are all winnable including this one and will be keen to relieve the pressure on his team as they search for a top four finish.

Sheffield United have started life back in the Premier League well with an away draw at Bournemouth followed up by a 1-0 victory at home to Crystal Palace. The team lost at home to Leicester City last time out courtesy of a goal from Sheffield born Jamie Vardy and a wonder strike from Harvey Barnes. Despite the fans appreciating the team’s efforts, manager Chris Wilder was less generous in his praise. It was somewhat refreshing to see a coach who feels 100% should be the standard output everytime and scolded his team for constantly losing the ball. The talk seemed to have worked as they pulled off a 2-1 win against Blackburn in the League Cup during the week.

In team news, Frank Lampard has some concerns over his first-team regulars as Pedro and N’Golo Kante will both be assessed prior to the game. Rising star Mason Mount also has a calf injury but is expected to be fit prior to the game. Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Reece James remain out but Antonio Rudiger is returning to match fitness and should feature at least once the international fixtures are over.

Sheffield United have thus far not reported many injuries with only Kean Bryan is known to be out whilst John Fleck is working his way back to fitness.

These two teams haven’t met in the Premier League for over 10 years so there isn’t much recent history to base this contest on. The teams met back in 2016 and 2017, games Chelsea won 2-0 and 3-0 respectively with Frank Lampard himself getting on the scoresheet in 2016.
