Stamford Bridge

Punter's Pick

Chelsea start this game as strong favourites and there is little value in backing an outright win. We feel the Blues will dominate this game despite the Saints looking to make it tough and back the -1 goal handicap market offered by Bet365 at 10/11. It is worth having a punt on Willian to score at anytime at 6/4 as well as Danny Ings at 2/1.

Chelsea welcome Southampton to Stamford Bridge in a game between two sides battling at opposite ends of the table. Chelsea are flying high and will be looking to cement their grip on a top four spot while Southampton will look to continue navigating away from the bottom three.

Chelsea come into this game on a high after beating Tottenham 2-0 away on Sunday evening. Two goals from Willian secured the points but the game represented a real symbolic moment for Frank Lampard as the apprentice had gotten one over on his former master in Jose Mourinho. Chelsea had much of the possession despite being the away team and with Spurs switching off from a corner allowed Willian to gather the ball and whip in a great goal from the corner of the box. He doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Spurs keeper Gazzaniga had a rush of blood to the head and took out Marcos Alonso. The game had a flashpoint as Heung-min Son and Antonio Rudiger clashed, resulting in Son getting a red card and allegations of racism from the crowd. Despite the unsavoury events, Lampard will have been relieved with the result as their form leading into the game had been patchy, losing to West Ham, Everton and Bournemouth in recent weeks.

Southampton will also be on a high having won their proverbial six-pointer against Aston Villa last time out. The Saints have now won three out of their last five Premier League games and the win at Villa allowed them to open up a three point gap from the relegation zone. Ralph Hasenhuttl will have been especially pleased with how his team pressed and took the attack to the home side and how they opened up a 3-0 lead courtesy of goals from Danny Ings (2) and Jack Stephens. A late Villa rally saw Jack Grealish pull one back but this wasn’t enough and the Saints can now focus on trying to put more daylight between themselves and the bottom three. The form of Danny Ings has been the main catalyst for their turnaround as Saints had been playing well in previous games without the rewards due to an inability to score. The Englishman has now hit seven in his last seven games and will be crucial if Southampton are to avoid the drop.

In team news Chelsea will be sweating on the fitness of captain Cesar Azpilicueta who came off at Tottenham with a hamstring injury. Frank Lampard has mentioned that some players are carrying minor knocks which will be assessed ahead of this game but none should be too serious.

Southampton’s exciting winger Moussa Djenepo remains out with a hamstring injury and forward Shane Long is also a doubt. Kevin Danso has recovered from illness with Sofiane Boufal potentially available after missing their last two games with a toe injury.

In recent times Chelsea have dominated this fixture with Southampton last registering a victory back in 2015. The Blues dominated the reverse fixture earlier in the season, running out 4-1 winners courtesy of goals from Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante and Michi Batshuayi.
