Selhurst Park

Punter's Pick

Everton look well priced at 11/8 with Bet365 to take advantage of the disarray caused by the Zaha saga and take all three points at Selhurst Park. Brazilian forward Richarlison started last season on fire and can be backed at 11/5 to score anytime and get his 2019/20 campaign up and running immediately.

Crystal Palace entertain Everton in a clash that has taken on an added dimension with the Wilfried Zaha affair looming over both clubs in this tasty looking opening day fixture.

Hot reception awaiting Zaha?
What should have been a game focussed on the traditional early season nerves and optimism has already been given an extra dimension by Zaha’s shock decision to try and force through a deadline day transfer to Everton. The deal did not materialize in the end, leaving Zaha in a very precarious position with his current club, especially after he spent most of the summer claiming to want a dream move to the club he allegedly supported as a youngster – Arsenal.

With the Gunners making other arrangements and securing Nicolas Pepe from Lille, Zaha looks to have gone after the next best thing which is the club immediately outside the top six – Everton. Unless a big European club comes in for him over the next three weeks, he faces a tough time at Palace and there still may be more fallout to come over this messy saga.

Brisk business at Everton
Despite not capturing Zaha, the summer has seen brisk business at Everton, will plenty of comings and goings. Idress Gueye and James McCarthy have departed (with McCarthy ironically to Palace) to be replaced by Fabian Delph from Manchester City and Jean-Phillipe Gbamin from Mainz.

Elsewhere Ademola Lookman’s departure has been offset by Moises Keen arriving from Juventus, whilst Alex Iwobi was a transfer deadline capture from Arsenal, complementing the permanent signing of Andre Gomes from Barcelona earlier in the summer.

With quite a few comings and goings, the squad overall looks to be in better shape, with the young Italian Moises Keen in particular an intriguing signing. The question will be how quickly Marco Silva can get his new signings to gel?

He will be helped with the likes of Delph and Iwobi having considerable Premier League pedigree already, which may give newer signings like Gbamin time to settle in.

Summer of discontent at Palace?
With the Zaha saga taking centre stage, Palace fans may have been forgiven to be slightly deceived by the severe lack of investment in a team that flirted with relegation for large parts of last season.

James McCarthy looks a useful addition in midfield, but doubts remain over whether 33 year old free transfer signing Gary Cahill still has the legs to compete at the top level, whilst the permanent capture of Jordan Ayew will have hardly set pulses racing. Victor Camarasa at least adds some excitement – the talented Spainard was excellent on loan at relegated Cardiff City last season and should add some creativity in the middle of the park.

‘Fortress’ Selhurst Park may fall on opening day
Despite the reputation of Selhurst Park of being a fearsome venue for visiting teams, Palace actually only managed five home wins in all of last season.

All too often they were wasteful in front of goal, and with Zaha likely to be absent for this fixture due to lack of fitness and the current furore surrounding him, Everton will fancy their chances of stealing all three points and kicking off their campaign with a morale boosting win.
