Goodison Park

Punter's Pick

In the betting markets, Everton start this game as favourites. However we feel that the price offered by Bet365 is still generous at 8/11, especially given Watford’s capitulation at home against Brighton. Everton are likely to have too much quality for Watford and should secure the three points on Saturday.

Everton play their first home game of the season as they host Watford at Goodison Park. Both teams got off to a slow start in games they would have fancied winning and they will be looking to get their first three points of the season on Saturday afternoon.

Everton had a strong finish to last season, having lost just once in their final eight Premier League games. There were signs that Marco SIlva was putting his stamp on the team and that they would have been able to kickstart this season with a few wins, especially as they will start most of their first six games as favourites. However a 0-0 draw away at Crystal Palace means they will be looking to push on in front of their home fans, despite dominating possession at Selhurst Park. SIlva will know that the fans were restless for long periods of last season and the pressure will be on to get the win. Investments in the summer mean that Silva possesses a squad which is worth more than most and therefore a top six would be the minimum requirement this time around.

Watford, who surprised many last year in the league on their way to the FA Cup Final, were brought down to earth in a 3-0 humbling at home against Brighton. An own-goal from Abdoulaye Doucoure started the slide and Florin Andone and Neal Maupay added to their misery in the second half. Javi Gracia will be keen for his men to bounce back and they have performed well when playing away in recent years. The team will most likely revert to a counter-attacking style and hope to catch Everton on the break, as previous encounters have shown that Everton are the team likely to dominate possession.

In team news, Everton will be without holding midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin who was sent off against Crystal Palace. Andre Gomes is being assessed having come off early in the second half at Selhurst Park whilst Leighton Baines could be in contention for a return to the first team. New signing Alex Iwobi will be assessed ahead of the game as Silva looks to add more industry and pace to his midfield.

For Watford, they will be looking to retain a lot of the starting 11 from last weekend for this encounter. New signing Danny Welbeck is still nursing an ankle injury, however Watford fans will be excited at the prospect of record signing Ismaila Sarr potentially playing a part on Saturday. The Senegal international cost £27m and will provide some much needed pace and trickery on the wings this season. Whether this game comes too soon for him after getting to the final of the African Cup of Nations remains to be seen.

In recent years, these two teams have been fairly evenly matched. Watford edged the encounters last season, with the teams playing out a 2-2 draw in the first game and Watford narrowly winning the second 1-0, courtesy of an Andre Gray strike.
