Punter's Pick

With Manchester City starting this game as overwhelming favourites, there isn’t much value in backing an outright win. The teams last played over three years ago when City ran out 4-0 winners with Sergio Aguero netting twice. With the bookmakers expecting many goals, we feel that there is an opportunity to back under 4.5 goals at 4/6 with Bet365. Aston Villa are likely to be compact and difficult to break down and an early fixture after a Champions League week means that the favourites are playing at a slightly reduced level. We are also backing over 2.5 cards at 4/7 with the same bookmaker.

Manchester City host Aston Villa at the Eithad Stadium, with the two sides currently occupying opposite positions in the table. The champions have closed the gap on leaders Liverpool to six points with Aston Villa enjoying a good run which has seen them rise to 12th. Could the midlanders join Norwich and Wolves in springing a surprise on the champions?

Manchester City come into this game having won seven out of their last eight games in all competitions. They were stunned by a 2-0 loss to Wolves courtesy of an Adama Traore brace but were back on track in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, where two quickfire goals from Gabriel Jesus and David Silva secured the points. They further showed their class in dismantling Atalanta 5-1 in the Champions League with Sergio Aguero netting a brace and Raheem Sterling scoring a hattrick within 12 minutes. The champions will want to keep the pressure up on leaders Liverpool who they meet on the 10th November in a crucial battle for the title.

Aston Villa had a difficult start to life back in the Premier League when they lost three of their first four games. But they have lost just one of their last five league games winning their last two against Norwich City and Brighton. Results against teams in and around them could well be the difference between safety and relegation and their 5-1 hammering of Norwich was particularly impressive, with Wesley, Jack Grealish, Conor Hourihane and Douglas Luiz all scoring. They followed up with a 2-1 win over Brighton with Grealish again on target and Matt Targett scoring a late winner. The team is now starting to gel and fans are more optimistic for the remainder of the season.

In team news, Manchester City will be without midfielder Rodri who is awaiting feedback on a hamstring injury. The Spaniard was deputising in central defence where Guardiola has had a number of injuries, but the news that John Stones could be fit to start will boost the champions. Left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko is also facing a spell out of the team having undergone knee surgery but they have cover in the form of Benjamin Mendy.

Aston Villa will be buoyed by the news that Jonathan Kodjia and Kortney Hause are both fit again as is James Chester who will be available for the first time this season. The only player missing is Jota which allows manager Dean Smith to pick many of the players that delivered back to back victories in their last two games.
