Etihad Stadium

Punter's Pick

Manchester City start this game as overwhelming favourites and there is little value in backing an outright win. We therefore feel that the over 3.5 goals market is well priced by Bet365 at 8/11, with City likely to dominate the game for large periods and add to their impressive goal tally. You can also back City to get over 8.5 corners at 11/10 with the same bookmaker.

Manchester City welcome Brighton to the Etihad Stadiumwith a view to heaping pressure on Liverpool before their late kick-off on Saturday. The champions are undefeated in their four competitive games thus far and they will be confident of making it five. In their way will be a confident Brighton side who gave them a major scare in the final game of last season before City clinched the Premier League at the ground of their visitors.

Thus far Manchester City have looked at their dominant best and powered past West Ham on the opening day by putting five goals past them in East London. However this was followed by an entertaining game against last season’s nemesis, Tottenham, against whom they lead twice only to be pegged back each time. A controversial VAR review ruled out a later winner for Gabriel Jesus and therefore the champions have already dropped points in the title race this season. But the draw was quickly forgotten after a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth courtesy of goals from Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling. Pep Guardiola will be hoping for a comprehensive win which will pile the pressure back on Liverpool before their late kick-off against Burnley.

Brighton won just one out of their first eight competitive games last season and they will be happy that they have already yielded four points from their first three games. An impressive opening day victory over Watford was followed up by a home draw against West Ham, before a 2-0 loss at home to Southampton. Graham Potter has worked hard to ensure Brighton remain a difficult team to beat but their main issue will be goals as they are still too reliant on Glenn Murray. He started with Maupay and Andone up front against the Saints and they were unable to score, which will be a major concern for this season.

In team news, Manchester City will be sweating on the news to see if John Stones could be declared fit. However this game is likely to come too soon for the England international and Laporte and Otamendi are likely to continue in defence. City will continue to be without long-term absentees Leroy Sane and Benjamin Mendy whilst Gabriel Jesus has also been ruled out with a hamstring injury.

For Brighton, striker Florin Andone is suspended whilst Jose Izquierdo (knee), Yves Bissouma (shoulder) and Ezequiel Schelotto (knee) are all out of the trip to Manchester.

In the last two seasons, City have dominated this fixture and have won their last five encounters including cup competitions. Last season saw them comfortably win 2-0 at the Etihad courtesy of goals from Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero. The Argentine was instrumental in calming any nerves last season when Brighton went ahead on the final day in a must win game – scoring a minute after Glenn Murray had given Brighton a surprise lead. Laporte, Mahrez and Gundogan all added goals to win the Premier League title at the Amex Stadium but Brighton know that they have had their moments against the champions and will be looking to stay in the game as much as possible in the hope of at least grabbing a point.
