Punter's Pick

Manchester City host Burnley at the Etihad where they will be looking to cement their grip on second place and open up a seven point gap over Leicester. With important cup games coming up, City will be keen to maintain their form with the visitors looking to close the gap on Manchester United and secure a place in Europe next season.

The champions come into this game off the back of a derby day loss against Manchester United and will be keen to get back to winning ways. Goals from Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay ended a five game winning streak in all competitions and Pep Guardiola will have been concerned at what he saw on Sunday afternoon. As much as the defeat would have hurt, City’s performances at times showed a lack of direction and thought not seen under Guardiola during his time here. The passing became sloppy with the team finding it difficult to penetrate United’s defence. The mistake of keeper Ederson in throwing out the ball straight to McTominay to score illustrated the lack of composure that has crept into City’s game. The introduction of Riyad Mahrez did provide a spark but with injuries to key players and some just coming back, City will need to improve if they are to add to their trophy count.

Burnley are in good form and have now gone seven games without defeat in the league. The run included excellent back to back wins against Leicester City and Manchester United with notable draws against Arsenal and Tottenham. Sean Dyche has certainly got his team organised and playing the kind of football they first displayed when they came into the Premier League. The start of the season was shaky for the Clarets but they have now built a solid foundation at the back conceding just three goals in their last seven Premier League games. The defensive partnership of James Tarkowski and Ben Mee has proven a difficult one to break down allowing Burnley a chance to nick a winner in every game. Chris Wood has continued to lead the line well up front with others all chipping in to share the goal scoring responsibilities and this has brought them to within six points of a European place. With plenty of games against teams in the bottom half remaining, Burnley fans will be hopeful of a top six finish this term.

In team news Manchester City will be sweating on the fitness of Aymeric Laporte and Kevin De Bruyne. Both players have been training but Guardiola may not risk them against a physical Burnley side. City fans will be buoyed by the news that Leroy Sane has been back in training but he may need a few more weeks to build his fitness up after eight months out. Benjamin Mendy will be missing having gone into self-isolation after a family member tested positive for the Corona Virus.

Burnley will be without Jay Rodriguez after the forward suffered a twisted knee joining Matthew Lowton, Ashley Barnes and Berg Gudmundsson on the sidelines. Much of the team will remain unchanged from last time out with the likes of Aaron Lennon and Robbie Brady likely to start on the bench.

Historically Manchester City have dominated this fixture with Burnley last recording a victory back in 2015. City were excellent in the reverse fixture and ran out 4-1 winners with goals from Gabriel Jesus (2), Rodri and Riyad Mahrez. There is little value in backing an outright City win and with the home side likely to dominate possession, we feel that going with over 11 corners at over evens represents good value with Bet365. City have been racking up the corner count in recent times, registering 11 against Manchester United and should continue this trend with much of their attacking threat coming from the wings.
