City of Manchester Stadium

Punter's Pick

Cardiff City will clearly be under the pump for most of the game and will be concentrating on damage limitation – with that in mind a draw with a +3 goals handicap for Cardiff looks an interesting proposition at 7/2 with Bet365. Alternatively if City are at their ruthless best and match their 5-0 demolition of Cardiff from earlier in the season they can be backed at 6/5 to score 4+ goals.

Struggling and out of luck Cardiff City head to the Etihad Stadium to face champions Manchester City in probably the last fixture the Bluebirds would want at this stage of the season.

Imperious City continue relentless march

Including their penalty shootout victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, imperious City are currently on a twelve match winning streak, hardly what Cardiff City fans and players alike will want to hear. In the league City come into this clash chasing their eighth successive win as they seek to retake top spot from Liverpool and set themselves up for their FA Cup Semi-Final clash with Brighton on the weekend. As if those stats were not daunting enough for the visitors, Manchester City also boast the best home record in the Premier League, winning fifteen games so far this season and losing just the once, a surprising 3-2 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace.

Cardiff with no hope against top six?

An unfortunate and controversial 2-1 defeat against Chelsea on Sunday condemned the Bluebirds to an ninth successive defeat against the big six sides. Of more concern will be that three of their remaining seven fixtures including this game are against teams in the top six, with Liverpool still to follow, and a daunting trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on the final day of the season. Assuming the pattern of the season to date follows, Cardiff effectively will need to find ten points from the other available twelve to reach the magic 38 points mark, widely tipped to be the number required to be safe this season.

Thrashing at home will be on Cardiff’s mind

As if to illustrate the gap and gulf in quality between the two sides, Cardiff have already been on the wrong end of a 5-0 hammering by Manchester City this season. The crushing defeat at home was pretty much a canter for City once Sergio Aguero broke through just after the half hour mark. Alarmingly Cardiff folded pretty quickly thereafter, with City adding two more strikes before half-time and a further brace from Riyad Mahrez after the break. Cardiff will be looking at that match and seeing where they can avoid making the same mistakes again, particularly giving City too much space on the flanks to pick their way through at will.

Team News

With one eye on the FA Cup Semi-Final, Pep Guardiola may be tempted to shuffle his pack slightly against the lowly opposition on offer. This could mean a rare start for Riyad Mahrez, and with Sergio Aguero coming off with a slight niggle against Fulham, Gabriel Jesus may also be restored to the starting lineup in his place.

Cardiff remain without their influential captain Sol Bamba, who is out until the end of the season. Defender turned striker Callum Paterson has also now all but been ruled out for the rest of the campaign too, the Scottish player suffering a serious ankle injury whilst on international duty against San Marino.

A question of how many for City?

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock tongue in cheek said he may consider playing his U23 side against the Citizens in the aftermath of their disappointing 2-1 loss to Chelsea and keep it down to a 10 or 11-0 score. Whilst he will probably start with a stronger team than playing his U23s and keep the end result in single figures, it still promises to be a long night for the Bluebirds. City will feel they can match the result from earlier in the season and even if some of the supporting cast get a start, they should still cruise to a comfortable and handsome victory.
