Etihad Stadium

Punter's Pick

Manchester City welcome Chelsea to the Etihad Stadium in the standout clash of the weekend. Both teams currently sit in the top four and will be looking to boost their Champions League credentials with a win as well as maintaining a push for the title. A loss here could potentially end either teams chances of challenging for the Premier League so the clash has become a real six-pointer.

Champions Manchester City come into this game having lost their top of the table clash with Liverpool. The Reds put on a dominant first-half display which saw them go two goals up in the first 13 minutes, with Sadio Mane adding a third soon after the break. City got a late consolation courtesy of Bernardo Silva but cracks are starting to appear in Guardiola’s team, as they stumbled to a 1-1 draw with Atalanta in the Champions League and needed a very late winner from Kyle Walker to dispose of struggling Southampton. Much has been made of Liverpool having already played the so-called big teams, of which City have to play four in their next six games including Manchester United, Arsenal and Leicester City. Guardiola knows that there can be no slip-up against a resurgent Chelsea side who have the players to hurt them come Saturday afternoon. How the team will setup in defence will be intriguing as Fernandinho was used in defence against Liverpool, with Aneglino deployed at left-back despite Benjamin Mendy being fit. The plan backfired and Mendy and Otamendi could find themselves in contention again given their somewhat brittle showing in midfield. However, Guardiola will take heart from the fact that his team were in a similar situation last season and still managed to overhaul Liverpool in the title run, so they must reset and go again after the international break.

Chelsea come into this game having lost just once in their last 11 games in all competitions including nine wins. Despite a tough start in the job and being hamstrung by a transfer ban, Chelsea’s youngsters have begun to flourish under Lampard and they have leap-frogged City in the table to currently occupy third place. Much has been made of the form of Tammy Abraham who sits on ten Premier League goals in 11 games and just one behind Jamie Vardy in the scorers charts. However the creative void left behind by Eden Hazard’s departure is also starting to be filled slowly by Christian Pulisic, who has supposed Abraham in netting five goals in six games including a hattrick against Burnley. The American’s runs from midfield and ability to take on defenders is helping the Blues cut-through defences with more regularity and with Kante, Kovacic, Mount and Willian offering options in midfield, Chelsea are well placed to continue their drive up the table. This will be the biggest test of how far they have come under Lampard and they may setup on the counter knowing that City will most likely dominate the ball at home. But Lampard has been part of teams in his playing days that have beaten similar opponents such as Barcelona and will know the tactics he can deploy to neutralise City’s threat.

In team news Manchester City have been boosted by the news that Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson returned to training on Thursday and will be part of the squad to face Chelsea. City will be without Bernardo Silva who faces a suspension but this could allow David Silva to slot back into the side.

Chelsea will welcome back pass-master Jorginho who has completed his suspension and is likely to start back in midfield. Christian Pulisic has trained despite having a hip injury and could feature on Saturday but there are doubts over Callum Hudson-Odoi who is struggling with a hamstring injury.

Despite the teams being evenly matched on paper over the years, City have had the better over their rivals in recent matches. Sergio Aguero inspired them to a 2-0 Community Shield win last season but Chelsea stunned their opponents by winning at Stamford Bridge courtesy of goals from N’Golo Kante and David Luiz. However City got their revenge in devastating style, despatching Chelsea 6-0 at the Etihad courtesy of a Sergio Aguero hat-trick, Raheem Sterling brace and strike from Gundogan.

Despite Chelsea starting this game above Manchester City, the champions are still strong favourites for this clash and there is little value in backing an outright City win. We feel that City will be wounded after their defeat by Liverpool and will look to attack from the off against Chelsea. This will increase the likelihood of corners which both teams rack up with their ability to attack from the flanks. Bet365 have currently priced over ten corners at evens (1/1) and we feel this is excellent value for when City play at home. Sergio Aguero is also priced at 8/13 to score anytime and with the Argentine netting five times against Chelsea last season alone, there is every chance he could repeat the trick on Saturday afternoon.
