City of Manchester Stadium

Punter's Pick

With a City victory offering little value, a punt on the corners market may provide a great alternative. The last two games between these two finished on a total of 14 corners. Bet365 are offering a generous even money (1/1) on over 10 corners. With City likely to attack, especially at home, this is very likely to come in.

Manchester City welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to The Etihad Stadium knowing that only a win will do, having seen Liverpool extend their lead at the top to 7 points. This is sure to heap pressure on Pep Guardiola’s men, but they showed their mental toughness and resolve in despatching Liverpool just over a week ago in their must win clash. However Wolves also come in to this game in confident mood having also beat Liverpool in the FA Cup and having a habit of upsetting the big teams this season.

Man City are facing a different kind of test this season by having a rival which has not only matched them stride for stride, but outrun them in the title race thus far. At this stage last year, many felt the title race was already over, so this definitely will be a test of Guardiola’s ability as a manager who ensures his team remain focussed and disciplined.

City come in to this game on the back of a 4 game winning run in all competitions, including the win over title rivals Liverpool. However, it was the festive period which caused a setback to their title challenge when they lost to Crystal Palace and Leicester City on the bounce. With Fernandinho back in front of the defence, City have regained their confidence and were ruthless against Rotherham and Burton in the cup competitions, scoring 16 goals over the two games.

Although this should strike fear in to any team that has the misfortune of facing City at this time, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have excelled when playing the big teams this season. They held Man City earlier in the season and draws away at Manchester United and Arsenal proved they would be no rollovers. Their status was further cemented when they beat Chelsea 2-1 at Molineux, so Guardiola’s men know that they are in for a tough evening at The Etihad.

In team news, City are hoping to welcome back Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany who were carrying niggles and rested for their cup games The key reinstatement of Fernandinho in to the midfield will allow City’s attackers to push on with freedom, knowing the Brazilian is protecting the backline behind them. In fact Guardiola has a near full strength squad to choose from as David Silva and the returning Kevin De Bruyne all have minutes under their belt, so will be interesting to see how they set up on Monday.

Wolves have no fresh injury concerns, with the trio of Rui Patricio, Matt Doherty and Romain Saiss all expected to return after being rested for Monday’s win over Liverpool.

These two teams have only met twice in recent times, with the game earlier in the season and a Cup game in 2017 the only comparables and both results ending in a draw. In fact Wolves had taken the lead in their Premier League game, only for Aymeric Laporte to equalise.

Despite Wolves being competitive and highly effective against the big teams, it is difficult to look past a City victory at home, especially when they have all their key personnel back and are looking to close the gap on Liverpool.
