Old Trafford

Punter's Pick

Ordinarily this game would be a very difficult one to pick but we feel that Arsenal start this game as strong favourites given the depleted nature of the United squad. Odds of 15/8 for an Arsenal win at Bet365 are very generous and with the likes of Aubameyang, Ozil and Nicolas Pepe potentially starting, the United defence could be in for a long evening. The lack of attacking options for United with Rashford and Martial unlikely to play means there is a lot of pressure on Mason Greenwood and Daniel James. This could be the best chance the Gunners have of an away victory at Old Trafford in quite a while.

Manchester United welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford in a heavyweight battle between two of the big guns in the Premier League. Both sides have struggled at times and there are already murmurings of discontent amongst players and fans alke, but victory on Monday night could be a season defining result for both managers.

Manchester United come into this game off the back of a 2-0 loss against West Ham. Goals from Yarmalenko and Chilwell condemned United to their second league defeat of the season, the other a 2-1 home loss to Crystal Palace. The Red Devils have only won two league games thus far and bookmakers are already shortening their odds on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being axed before Christmas. It has been a far cry from when the Norweigan first took over as the squad has looked light since the start of the season. Injuries to big players like Anthony Martial and the departures of Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku have proved that the impact has been too big for Solskjaer to resolve. Most of the youngsters have been entrusted with taking the club forward and it has not been fruitful thus far. However a fixture such as this could galvanise the team and a result against a top four rival could propel United to go on another run which will allow them to strengthen again in January.

Arsenal start the game in eight place knowing that victory will help them leapfrog enighbours Tottenham and get back into the Champions League places. Like United, the Gunners have been exposed in many games with calamitous defensive mistakes coupled with their midfielders being bullied out of some games being of real concern for Unai Emery. They have however maintained a squad that is packed full of international players with Gabon international Aubameyang proving the main difference. The striker has hit six goals in six Premier League games including a late winner against Aston Villa when they played most of the game with ten men. Despite the solitary loss to Liverpool in all competitions, draws against Tottenham and Watford have shown their defensive frailties.

In team news, United are likely to be without the forward pair of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial which could force Ole Gunnar Solskjaer into starting with 17 year old Mason Greenwood. Paul Pogba is struggling to be fit after picking up an ankle injury although Luke Shaw is back in training.

Arsenal will be without Alexandre Lacazette which means Aubameyang may be leading the line on his own with midfield runners looking to support. Rob Holding, Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney are all fit for the Gunners with Granit Xhaka named as the new club captain. How he fares will be an interesting watch having been booed off by some of his own supporters in recent games.

In recent meetings between these two sides honours have been even. Both met three times last season including an FA Cup game, with the sides drawing 2-2 at Old Trafford in the league. Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard scored for United with Mustafi and a Marcos Rojo own goal helping to split the points. United however were impressive in their 3-1 FA Cup victory before the Gunners got their revenge with a 2-0 victory courtesy of goals from Granit Xhaka and Aubameyang.
