Punter's Pick

With not much value for Manchester United to win such as 9/20 with Bet365, both teams to score at 4/5 with the same firm looks a tad more interesting given United have only two clean sheets at home in the league this season. Both teams to score and the Red Devils to win at 21/10, also with Bet365 could be one of the better value picks for this match too.

Champions League spot chasing Manchester United take on relegation threatened Southampton at Old Trafford, with three points imperative at both ends of the table.

United squad depth coming to the fore

Despite Jose Mourinho’s constant protestations about United’s squad depth (and lack of it), the Red Devils have ridden out an injury storm impressively to draw 0-0 against bitter rivals Liverpool and win 3-1 away at Crystal Palace last time out. The architect of that win was Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, who despite not being first choice since Ole Gunnar Solskjær took charge, weighed in with a brace of goals to help ease United to all three points.

That win leaves United just one point behind fourth placed Arsenal, with a crunch clash against the Gunners to follow next weekend. With a 2-0 deficit in the Champions League looking an almost mountain to climb against Paris Saint Germain, a top four slot looks their most likely route back into Europe’s elite competition next season.

Saints battling hard against the drop

Southampton’s battle against relegation looks almost certain to go down to the wire, with the Saints and Cardiff City swapping places for the last relegation spot with alarming regularity. The worry for manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will that three of the next four games including this one come against sides from the top six, meaning his side could very easily get reined in and overtaken by Cardiff in the upcoming weeks.

Their recent form has been reasonable for a side battling to survive, with three wins in their last seven league games representing a fair return. They go into this game off the back of a comfortable 2-0 win against fellow strugglers Fulham, and encouragingly from their point of view, they have gone to another top six side in the shape of Chelsea and come away with a point this season.

Team News

United forward Marcus Rashford is in contention to start after an ankle knock sustained against Liverpool restricted him to a cameo from the bench against Crystal Palace in midweek. Fellow striker Anthony Martial, who has been out with a groin injury, has an outside chance of being fit, and may make it to the substitutes’ bench.

Southampton forward Danny Ings continues to be absent and will miss a fourth consecutive match because of a hamstring problem. Saints fans will be desperate for his return soon as the on-loan striker remains their top scorer this season with eight goals. Fellow striker Michael Obafemi has unfortunately been ruled out for the rest of the season, while Mario Lemina continues to be another noticeable absentee due to an abdominal problem.

United to end mini slump at home?

no wins in their last three home games in all competitions, which include back to back games having not scored, it seems inconceivable they will not put both records right against Southampton. The Saints only have one win in their least 33 league games against the top six teams, and it seems their ambitions may be limited to trying to frustrate United and escape with a point. However with Romelu Lukaku firing again and still an able support cast available to supply him despite recent injury problems, the Red Devils should have enough to close this game out.
