Villa Park

Punter's Pick

Everton start this game as favourites and we believe the price offered by Bet365 is very generous at 5/4. The Blues have taken four out of their six points whilst the Villa defence is struggling having lost both their opening games. We feel this pattern will continue with the Toffees having too much firepower and should claim all three points.

Aston Villa host Everton on Friday night hoping to get their first points of the new season against an Everton side that has made a solid if not spectacular start. The two teams last met over three years ago and much has been expected this season due to the value and depth of each squad.

Thus far it has not been a fairytale return back to the Premier League for Aston Villa. They have lost their opening two games against Tottenham and Bournemouth and are already struggling in their quest to stay in England’s top division. This is despite spending over £130m during the transfer window and adding 12 new members to the squad. The opening day defeat to Tottenham initially looked as if it could have been a Villa victory, having lead through John McGinn’s 9th minute goal for over an hour. However Spurs hit three goals in the last 17 minutes with two from Harry Kane in the final five to break Villa hearts. The Villans seemed out of the game against Bournemouth within the first 15 minutes as a 2nd minute penalty from Josh King and 12th minute strike from Harry Wilson made it difficult, despite a consolation from Douglas Luiz. Villa will need to be tight and resolute at the back where they have struggled when they come up against a talented Everton side.

Everton have started well and taken four out of a possible six points in their opening two games. A 0-0 draw away at Crystal Palace was followed up by a home victory over Watford courtesy of a Barnard goal. It feels as if the Toffees are just feeling their way into the new season and that they have more gears to go through once the team has settled back into regular football. The additions of Moise Kean and Alex Iwobi are likely to give Everton more pace and power in the final third and they could have a part to play at Villa Park on Friday.

In team news, Kortney Hause will have to wait for his debut having been ruled out with an on-going ankle injury. He is joined by centre back James Chester who is struggling with a thigh injury and forward Jonathan Kodija who also has an ankle injury.

Everton are likely to remain without Fabian Delph, with the England international struggling to overcome a groin strain. Full-back pairing Leighton Baines and Lucas Digne are also unlikely to make the starting lineup but Morgan Schneiderlin will be available for selection having served his red card ban from the game against Crystal Palace.

With Villa’s absence from the Premier League, it has been over three years since these two teams last met. In the 2015/16 season, Everton dominated with victories in both games as a 4-0 win at Goodison Park was followed up with a 3-1 win at Villa Park, with Romelu Lukaku scoring in both games.
