St James’ Park

Punter's Pick

Betfair have Newcastle at 13/8 to pick up all three points, and after their excellent away performance last weekend they should be backed to deliver again in front of their own fans. Allan Saint-Maximin did everything but score last weekend as he tormented West Ham’s defence, and the popular Newcastle winger is 7/2 to score anytime this time out and open his account for the season.

A revitalized Newcastle United side take on seventh placed Bournemouth, with both sides looking to build on strong wins last weekend.

Stunning away day showing from Newcastle

Newcastle went into last weekend’s fixtures under pressure of finishing the day possibly in the bottom three, further adding to the growing dissent around the unpopular appointment of Steve Bruce in the summer. However an unexpected 3-2 win at West Ham, aided by another poor performance from the hosts eased the pressure on Bruce and gives Newcastle a handy four point cushion on the relegation places for now.

Part of the problem for the hosts has been the lack of goals this season, so the result was even more remarkable given they had only scored six goals going into the fixture with the Hammers. The Geordie faithful will be hoping for more of the same, particularly at home, where they have been starved of goals and entertainment so far this campaign.

Bournemouth back on track after goal drought

Unusually for free flowing Bournemouth, last weekend’s strike from Josh King was their first goal after three successive blanks, and it proved to be the winning goal as the Cherries ended a run of four games without a win with a 1-0 win against Manchester United. That win propelled them into seventh position in the league, leaving them sitting above more illustrious clubs such as Manchester United, Spurs and West Ham. Manager Eddie Howe will be hoping that win kickstarts a run of better form going into the winter months, and a shot at the top ten should be a realistic aim for his team.

Team News

Bournemouth remain without winger Junior Stanislas and left-back Charlie Daniels. who are both recovering from long term knee surgeries. Attacking midfielder David Brooks is also recovering from surgery on an ankle injury sustained in July, whilst former Newcastle midfielder

Dan Gosling will miss a return to his former club through a hip injury. The veteran midfielder has yet to make an appearance this season and no date has been set for his return.

Newcastle are sweating on the fitness of influential duo Fabian Schar and Matt Ritchie, whilst Florian Lejeune has played twice for the Magpies’ Under-23s in recent weeks and could come into contention. Definitely ruled out is teenager Sean Longstaff, who is serving the second game of a three-match ban.

Newcastle to edge it?

Both sides will be on a high after last weekend’s success, and will feel confident of taking all three points, which should make for an open and exciting contest. Newcastle at last showed their attacking teeth last weekend, and fans will hope that will be a turning point as they look to turn in more ruthless performances at home, where goals have been hard to come by. Backed by a home crowd the hosts may just have enough variety in their attack to breach Bournemouth’s fast-improving defence and steal all three points.
