St Jame’s Park

Punter's Pick

We think the style of both managers, which is usually to be well drilled and organised, will make this a low-scoring affair. That’s why we will be backing the under 2.5 goals market at 4/6 offered by Bet365. If the game does become open there should be an ability to cash out on this market should there be no goals after the first 20 minutes or so.

Newcastle welcome Crystal Palace to St James’ Park knowing that a few more victories can secure top-flight football for another season. The Magpies sit seven points above Cardiff whilst Palace are only a further point better off, so both teams will want to ensure they get something from this game.

Despite putting together some impressive results in recent times, Newcastle have just gone off the boil recently, winning just once out of their last four fixtures. Wins against fellow relegation battlers Huddersfield and Burnley allowed Benitez’s men some comfort and their 3-2 reversal against Everton and a last minute draw against Bournemouth boosted them further. With tricky fixtures coming up against Leicester, Southampton and Liverpool, Newcastle will want to make home form count and further cement their place in the country’s top division. They have been particularly impressive at home racking up five wins on the bounce.

Crystal Palace have been patchy in recent times losing four out of their last six games in all competitions including an FA Cup exit against Watford. They lost to Tottenham 2-0 last time out and Roy Hodgson will be demanding a strong finish to the season given the firepower they have on paper. Goals are still a concern but the form of Michy Batshuayi has been promising since he came to the club.

In team news, Fabian Schar is set to return after a two match suspension to boost Newcastle’s defensive options. Isaac Hayden, Mo Diame and DeAndre Yedlin all face late fitness tests to see if they can feature. Benitez is likely to persist with the frontline of Rondon, Almiron and Ayoze Perez who have all performed well in recent weeks.

Crystal Palace are likely to bring back Andros Townsend against his old club and the winger will be hoping to pay Palace back for the winning goal he scored for the Magpies against them in 2016. Hodgson doesn’t seem to have any fresh injury concerns, with Mamadou Sakho the only guaranteed absentee.

Games between these two have been cagey affairs with not many goals for the fans to cheer. There have only been a total of four goals in the last four games featuring these two and given that neither will take their top-flight status for granted, could result in a tight game at St James’ Park. The reverse fixture resulted in a 0-0 draw and they also played out a 1-1 draw last season, so fans can expect a game of chess between two evenly matched teams.
