St James’ Park

Punter's Pick

Manchester City start this game as strong favourites and there is little value in backing an outright win. Newcastle have proven to be stubborn opponents in their last few encounters as City have struggled to breakdown a defensive setup and therefore rarely run away with the game. Therefore we feel that the odds of under 3.5 goals being set by Bet365 offer excellent value at 8/11. Both games last season finished with each team claiming a 2-1 win and this market would have paid out. City are also likely to dominate the game and claim a high corner count and over 10 corners can also be backed at evens with the same bookmaker.

Newcastle United welcome champions Manchester City to St James’ Park to kick off the latest round of Premier League games. Newcastle will be looking to gain points to pull themselves away from the relegation zone while City will want to put pressure on Liverpool by reducing the points gap to six before the Reds kick off at 3pm. Can Newcastle match Norwich and Wolves by springing a surprise against the holders?

After a poor start to the season, Newcastle had a decent spell where they lost just once in five games, winning three along the way against Manchester United, West Ham and Bournemouth. This helped them gain a five point gap over 18th placed Norwich and get some space between themselves and the relegation zone but Steve Bruce will be wary of complacency, especially as the team lost last time out against Aston Villa. The international break came at the wrong time for the Magpie’s with Villa dominating most of the game and deservedly taking three points courtesy of goals from Conor Hourihane and Anwar El Ghazi’s. Any result here would be seen as a bonus but the team then have a run of season defining games against teams in and around them in the league. Positive results could help them look towards a top half finish but the team need to change tactics to be able to support striker Joelinton who has struggled in the league. The Brazilian has scored just once in 13 appearances and needs the help of Shelvery, Almiron and Maximin if Newcastle are to improve their scoring record.

Manchester City come into this game having secured their passage through the group stages in the Champions League and beating top four rivals Chelsea 2-1 last week. The champions aren’t dominating and sweeping away teams as they have done in previous seasons and this will be a concern for Guardiola as more teams are making them win by the odd goal. Defeats at the hands of Norwich, Wolves and Liverpool already this season has meant that Guardiola may need to get through the rest of the season with an almost perfect record from hereon in and battling on multiple fronts as already seen them struggle with injuries. Pep will most likely look to press from the off in this one in order to get the game done and dusted early so he can allow some of his superstars to rest as the next batch of fixtures include ties against Manchester United, Arsenal and Leicester.

In team news Newcastle will be looking to welcome back Fabian Schar who has been out for six weeks through injury. Florian LeJeune could also play a part but fan favourite Matt Ritchie has been ruled out until the new year having undergone on a second operation on his ankle.

Manchester City have confirmed that star striker Sergio Aguero will miss this tie due to a thigh injury, with Gabriel Jesus most likely to take his place. Oleksandr Zinchenko, Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sane remain long-term absentees with Pep most likely to field Fernandinho in defence again with Gundogan and Rodri battling for the defensive midfielder position.

In recent times Manchester City have dominated this fixture winning five out of their last seven games. Newcastle did however win their latest tie played at St James’ last season, with Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie both scoring to overturn Sergio Aguero’s first minute opener. The Magpie’s showed the grit and determination required to hustle City who couldn’t get any fluency in their game despite going up so early.
