St Jame’s Park

Punter's Pick

Both sides to find the net looks good value with Southampton’s generous defence again in the spotlight, and can be backed at 19/20 with Bet365 to come to fruition. Ayoze Perez has scored three of Newcastle’s last five league goals, and can be backed to find the net anytime at 13/5, again with Bet365.

Newcastle United host Southampton at St James’ Park, with both sides aiming for the win that will all but assure their Premier League survival for another season.

Southampton recover under Hasenhuttl

The appointment of Ralph Hasenhuttl raised eyebrows in certain quarters, with many questioning whether the Austrian would have the appetite for a relegation scrap compared to the usual suspects who were linked to the role. However with eight wins in their last eighteen league games, the charismatic manager has steered to the Saints to the brink of safety, currently sitting five points clear of the relegation zone. Hasenhuttl record since taking over is even more impressive when considering the two previous managers at Southampton managed to win the same number of games the Austrian has in 52 previous matches before he took over.

It appears the main problem the Saints have to work on as they can almost begin to prepare for another season in the Premier League is their tendency to give up points from winning positions. They have let slip 23 points from a winning position so far this season – a league high, and surely cannot afford to be as generous next season if they wish to stay out of another relegation dogfight.

Newcastle remain enigmatic at home

The Magpies have enjoyed a renaissance of late at St James’ Park, with their home form being crucial to pulling the club out of the relegation scrap. Five wins in their last six home games is up there with the teams at the top of table, with the run only ended by Crystal Palace in their most recent home fixture.

However on the flipside is Newcastle can often be tamed at home, not surprising given their sometimes lack of inventiveness when they need to come out and attack teams. They have failed to score at home in six of their seventeen home games so far this season, with only Crystal Palace and bottom placed Huddersfield Town having worse records, so it will be a question of which Newcastle shows up on Saturday.

Team News

Newcastle have no fresh injury concerns ahead of the visit of the Saints, with long term absentees Sean Longstaff and Florian Lejeune the only definite players missing. Manager Rafa Benitez is more than likely to opt for the side that impressively won 1-0 at Leicester City last time out.

Southampton are still likely to be without midfielder Mario Lemina, despite the midfielder returning to training after being ruled out for several months with an abdominal injury. Defender Jannik Vestergaard is a doubt with a groin problem but young full-back Yan Valery is fit after a thigh injury whilst Matt Targett and Charlie Austin should overcome minor niggles to be able to play a part.

Close encounter could end in a stalemate

Southampton have enjoyed a good recent record against Newcastle, losing just one of the last nine games against The Magpies. Equally Newcastle have only lost one of the last thirteen home games against the Saints, so it could be setup for a tight encounter on Saturday. With both sides almost clear of relegation trouble it could be a game that features goals, with Southampton in particular rarely involved in tight stalemates. Both sides may ultimately be happy to settle for a point as they inch closer to Premier League safety.
