Carrow Road

Punter's Pick

Norwich City to win or draw is available at Evens with Bet365, and looks to be great punt given United’s woeful form away from home in the Premier League, stretching back to last season. In what might prove to be a tight and cagey affair, under 2.5 goals is also available at Evens, again with Bet365.

Premier League strugglers Norwich City and Manchester United go head to head at Carrow Road in one of a batch of Sunday games, with both sides desperate for three points as they look to move clear of the bottom half of the table.

Who can end winless run?

Both sides go into this game on the back of a barren run in the Premier League, with neither side having recorded a win in their last four games. For the hosts, that run takes in a run of three defeats, a run of losses only ended with a credible goalless draw away at Bournemouth last weekend. That result still leaves them entrenched in the relegation places, but a win would put them level on points with the visitors, such is the congested nature at the bottom half of the table.

United have fared little better than Sunday’s opponents, with two draws and two defeats in their last four games. Last weekend saw them at least end bitter rivals Liverpool’s perfect start to the season with a 1-1 draw, but it still remains one of their poorest starts to a top flight campaign in their illustrious history, and another defeat surely will ramp up pressure again on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

How will United set up this week?

Last weekend’s clash against Liverpool saw United put away their egos and concede they were up against a superior side. This resulted in changing to a 3-5-2 formation, which in effect often became a 5-3-2 with the wing backs dropping in deep to deny Liverpool’s potent full-backs the chance to drive forward and deliver crosses from telling positions. With the lively front two of Marcus Rashford and Daniel James doing enough to keep the league leaders busy, the plan almost worked to perfection, only for a late defensive lapse allowing Liverpool a simple equalizer.

Solskjaer may be tempted to again put away egos and ignore calls of United being the bigger side and ‘having to go for it’ and opt for a similar setup, Norwich have proven to be vulnerable in defence as they pile bodies forward in search of goals, and with the pacy Rashford and James in attack they may well be better off adopting a similar approach they did last weekend.

Team News

Manchester United’s considerable injury list means they will likely be denied the services of Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw, Nemanja Matic, Diogo Dalot and Eric Bailly. Axel Tuanzebe limped out of the warm up last weekend against Liverpool with a hip problem, but Anthony Martial made a goalscoring return in Thursday’s Europa League tie and will be pushing for a return to the starting XI.

Norwich have well documented problems of their own with injuries, particularly in defence, but central defender Ben Godfrey is available despite being substituted last weekend because of a reaction to his recent hernia surgery. The Canaries will however be without Timm Klose, Mario Vrancic, Ralf Fahrmann, Grant Hanley and Christoph Zimmermann.

Hosts to do enough to pick up a point?

With Manchester City having already been dispatched at home this season, Norwich will certainly not fear their Manchester counterparts, particularly given United’s shaky current form. If they can keep things tight at the back as they did last weekend against a decent Bournemouth side, they should be able to do enough to pick up a point from this fixture.
